Men's Soccer Battles No. 4/1 West Virginia Tuesday At Baujan

The Flyers and Mountaineers Kickoff At 7 p.m. In The Non-Conference Finale

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team hosts No. 4/1 West Virginia Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field in the final non-conference game of the season.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is looking to rebound after a tough home loss to Fordham Saturday and sits at 5-2-3 on the season. The Flyers have suffered both of their losses at home this year including a 3-0 defeat to Jacksonville on Aug. 25.

Head coach Dennis Currier is in his 20th year at Dayton and is the winningest coach in program history. He ranks eighth among active Division I coaches in career wins.

Dayton is averaging 2.70 goals per game and giving up 1.40 goals to opponents. The Flyers have one of the most dangerous attacks in the country, ranking second nationally with 21.7 shots per game compared to 10.1 attempts by opposing teams. UD is also Top 25 in goals, points, and corner kicks.

Leading the way for the Flyers is graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson with five goals and four points from a defensive position and sophomore striker Martin Bakken with six goals and an assist. Both players have earned A-10 Offensive Player of the Week honors this season. Graduate student goalkeeper Dario Caetano has played every minute the past three seasons and has 32 saves and two shutouts in 2024.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
WEST VIRGINIA

No. 4 West Virginia comes to Dayton with national title hopes in its future. The Mountaineers are unbeaten this season with an 8-0-3 record on the year and a three-game winning streak. WVU is 4-0-1 in road games this season.

Head coach Dan Stratford is in his fourth season at the helm of his alma mater. The former National Coach of the Year has led the Mountaineers to the NCAA Quarterfinals and College Cup.

As a team, WVU has one of the stingiest defenses in Division I with a 0.82 goals against average and the third-best shutout percentage in the nation. The Mountaineers are scoring 2.27 goals each outing and outshooting opposing squads 16.3 to 6.6.

Powering the WVU attack is Sergio Ors Navarro, who ranks third in the country with 11 goals in 11 games. Marcus Caldeira has chipped in six goals while Simon Carlson has four goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Marc Bonnaire has five shutouts, ranking ninth nationally.

LAST OUTING
Dayton suffered just its second loss of the season with a 4-2 defeat at home to Fordham Saturday. The Flyers trailed by two at the half before tying it up in the 64th minute, but the Rams answered with two more for the win.

West Virginia defeated Georgia Southern on the road Friday for its third straight win 4-2. Marcus Caldeira scored in the sixth minute and added another in the opening minute of the second half in route to victory.

SETTING THE STANDARD
Dayton leads the nation in shots per game and ranks third in scoring offense, fourth in shots on goal, and 10th in corner kicks per game.

Individually, Joseph Melto Quiah ranks fifth in the country in shots per game while Martin Bakken is 38th in total goals.
