WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team received four all-conference selections in the Atlantic 10's End-of-Season Awards, the league office announced.
Jason Bello and Danny MacDougall were named to the First Team All-Conference at third and second base, respectively. Michael Smith Jr. made the Second Team All-Conference as an outfielder. Bello is joined by Colin Lynch on the All-Rookie team.
MacDougall rounds out the conference recognition with a spot on the All-Academic team.
Bello started in 53 of Dayton's 54 games, finishing his first season with a .286/.404/.617 slash line. The two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week tallied a team-high 18 home runs, in addition to his 44 runs scored and 56 RBIs. His 18 homers were good for second in the conference and third in UD's single-season records, playing a key role in helping to set the Flyers' single-season home run record of 91. The Fort Myers, Fla. native also recorded 24 putouts and 93 assists at third base.
MacDougall was heralded as one of the top second basemen in the country, earning Baseball America Team of the Week twice, being ranked twice in D1Baseball's Top 50 Second Basemen and receiving A-10 Player of the Week for two weeks this season. One of the team's iron men and starting in all 54 games, the graduate student led the FlyBoys with a .384 batting average, a .661 slugging percentage, 70 runs scored, 86 hits and 24 doubles. MacDougall's 24 doubles set Dayton's single-season record, last set in 2006. The Taunton, Mass. native also finished the season second on the team and third in program history in stolen bases with 34.
MacDougall has a cumulative GPA of 3.910, helping to earn him a spot on the All-Academic team, which is determined by athletic communications staff members around the A-10.
Smith Jr. appeared in all but one game for the FlyBoys, slashing .332/.502/.588. The junior led the team with 38 stolen bases, setting a single-season record. He also helped the team set a program record of 121 hit by pitches, accounting for 20 of them. The Pensacola, Fla. native also tabbed 10 doubles and home runs on the season. Against A-10 opponents, the outfielder led the league with 30 walks and 24 stolen bases and was third with a .513 slugging percentage. Smith Jr. also earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on May 4 and was No. 67 on D1Baseball's Top 100 Outfielders in week 12.
Lynch made his mark on the Dayton roster, appearing in 54 games and starting in 53 as a true freshman. Splitting time between left field and designated hitter, he finished his first season with a .289/.398/.508 slash line. His power at the plate led to 10 doubles and 11 home runs. The Doylestown, Pa. native recorded 56 RBIs and 42 runs scored, tying Bello and Smith Jr. in RBIs this season. Lynch was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week twice this season and was the first rookie to earn the honor twice.
