WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team's Michael Smith Jr. and Jason Bello have earned weekly honors from the Atlantic 10, the conference announced.
This marks Smith Jr.'s first Atlantic 10 award, picking up Co-Player of the Week. Bello has now received his second A-10 Rookie of the Week recognition.
Against Akron and La Salle, Smith Jr. had a .438 batting average. He went 7-for-16 at the plate, hitting a double and three home runs. Two of the three home runs for the junior were grand slams against La Salle. He tallied 14 RBIs on the week, including eight in Friday's 12-9 win, good for second-most in program history. The Pensacola, Fla. native also had 11 runs scored and two stolen bases.
At center field, Smith Jr. had seven putouts.
Bello went 5-for-18 in Dayton's 3-1 week, going for extra bases with all five hits. The third baseman hit one double and four home runs, going yard twice in the FlyBoys' 21-14 win. In total, the Fort Myers, Fla. native had eight RBIs and four runs scored. Bello leads UD with 17 home runs.
At third base, Bello recorded 10 assists.
