After being on the road for two weeks the Flyers will return to Baujan Field for a matchup against Loyola (Ill.) this Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The first 400 fans through the gate will receive Flyer Silly Bands and a poster.
UD will then travel across town to Fairborn, Ohio for a non-conference match against Wright State on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field.
SERIES INFORMATION
The Flyers are 4-0 all-time against Loyola-Chicago and19-4-2 overall against the Raiders. Dayton met up against both squads last season, coming away with a 1-0 win at Loyola in its season opener and a 0-0 double overtime tie at home vs. Wright State.
FLYER NOTES
• The Flyers are 6-2-0 and coming off a 2-0 weekend at the Penn Invitational, claiming the title.
• Dayton’s 1-0 setback to No. 21 Ohio State on Sept. 3, 2010 was the first regular season loss at Baujan Field since a 1-0 loss to Rutgers on Sept. 14, 2008.
• Six of UD’s eight matches this season have been decided by one goal and three have gone to OT.
• Sophomore Colleen Williams leads the Flyers with 14 points (6 goals and 2 assists). Four of her goals have been game-winners. Her 14 points and six goals lead the Atlantic 10.
• Freshman Juliana Libertin has dished three game-winning assists this season.
• Alli Giner scored a goal and had the game-winning assist in Dayton’s 2-0 win over Air Force.
• Senior Lisa Rodgers is 4-0 with three shutouts in four starts in goal for the Flyers. She has 16 saves and a 0.48 GAA, second best in the A-10.
• The Flyers return 16 players from the team that posted a 16-1-6 record and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
UP NEXT
After a bye week, Dayton opens the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule with home games against Fordham and La Salle. The Flyers’ match against the Rams on Friday, Oct. 1 will be senior night and their Sunday afternoon match against the Explorers will be UD’s Think Pink Match.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
LOYOLA
• Loyola is 2-6 and just had its two-game win streak ended by a 3-0 setback to Michigan State. The Ramblers two wins have been shutouts, 1-0 vs. NIU and 2-0 vs. Iowa State.
• Sophomore Kristin Papierski leads Loyola with three goals. Freshman Alex Brown scored the Ramblers’ only other goal.
• Junior goalkeeper Katie Groesch has 14 saves and two shutouts to her credit while posting a 1.92 GAA.
WRIGHT STATE
• The Raiders host Toledo at Alumni Field on Friday before hosting the Flyers on Sunday. Dayton registered a 2-1 win over the Rockets in the first weekend of action.
• WSU has a 3-3 record, and all of its games have been on the road until this weekend.
• Wright State had its three-game winning streak ended by a 4-3 double overtime loss at Canisius on Sept. 10.
• Former Flyer Brittany Persaud (she played in eight games for UD as a freshman in 2008), now a junior, leads WSU with nine points (3 g, 3a) and senior Amber Kasner has eight points (3g, 2a).
• Freshman Brooke McCurdy has played five games in goal for WSU. She has 37 saves and a 1.80 GAA.
SUCCESSFUL SENIORS
CollegeSoccer360 has compiled a list of the winningest women’s senior classes (2007-’10) and the Flyers come in at No. 16 in the nation. UD’s win percentage as of Sept. 9 is .743. When the current seniors were freshmen the Flyers posted a 13-4-4 record. As sophomores they went 15-6-1, and as juniors only lost one game, going 16-1-6. The seniors are 6-2 so far this season.
HIGH FLYERS
In the most recent NCAA rankings, Colleen Williams comes in at 11th in the nation for goals scored (6) and 13th for total points (14). Lisa Rodgers is ranked 26th in the nation for goals-against average with 0.48.
PENN INVITE CHAMPS
Dayton won the Penn Invitational (Sept. 10 & 12) with victories over Lehigh, 3-2 in overtime, and over the host Quakers, 2-0. Colleen Williams, Kelly Blumenschein, Jerica DeWolfe and Emily Kenyon were all named to the Penn Invitational All-Tournament Team.
RARE OVERTIME LOSS FOR FLYERS
Dayton suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Colorado College Aug. 27. UD has not lost a match that went to extra time since Aug. 31, 2008 when Dayton lost 1-0 in OT to No. 18 Illinois. Since, the Flyers have gone 6-0-7 in overtime games, including 2-0-6 last season when UD played in a school-record eight overtime matches.
WILLIAMS NAMED A-10 POTW
Colleen Williams was honored as the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week following the first weekend of the 2010 season (Aug. 23). She was in on all three Flyer goals, tallying five points on two goals and an assist, leading Dayton to a pair of wins over Butler and Toledo. Williams leads the Flyers with nine points. She is also currently listed on the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 Upperclassmen list, which includes the highest ranked college soccer players in the nation.
KATHLEEN BELJAN MAKES UD HISTORY
Flyer junior defender Kathleen Beljan became the first-ever UD women’s soccer player to be named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s 2010 Hermann Trophy Watch List. Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipient of the MAC’s Hermann Trophy is selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
KELLY BLUMENSCHEIN NAMED TO SENIOR CLASS LIST
University of Dayton women’s soccer player Kelly Blumenschein has been selected as a candidate for the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. She is one of 30 student-athletes in the country to be considered for the prestigious honor.
SIX FLYERS HONORED ON A-10 PRESEASON TEAMS
The defending Atlantic 10 champion University of Dayton Flyers dominated the 2010 preseason women’s soccer All-Conference team, as selected by the league’s head coaches. Those named to the Preseason team for UD were: Katherine Boone, Kathleen Beljan, Kelsey Miller and Colleen Williams. Juliana Libertin and Maggie Murnane were named to the preseason All-Rookie Team.
FLYER SUCCESS
The Dayton women’s soccer program owns an overall record of 346-149-41 (.687 winning percentage) since it became a varsity program in 1984. The Flyers made NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2009.
FLYERS PICKED TO WIN IT ALL
For the second consecutive year, Dayton has been selected to claim the Atlantic 10 women’s soccer title in voting conducted by the league’s head coaches. The Flyers posted an impressive 16-1-6 overall record en route to the program’s sixth A-10 title and second round appearance in the NCAA Championship. Under the direction of reigning A-10 Coach of the Year Mike Tucker, Dayton returns five All-Conference selections including 2009 Defensive Player of the Year Katherine Boone, along with Rookie of the Year Colleen Williams. The six-team A-10 Women’s Soccer Championship will be held Nov. 4-7 at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, R.I.
