DOUG JONES NAMED AMERICAN FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION I-AA ALL-AMERICA

Dec. 16, 2004

DAYTON -  University of Dayton senior safety Doug Jones (Zanesville, OH) has been named to the 2004 American Football Coaches Association Division I-AA All-America team.

This honor caps a spectacular senior season for Jones. The Flyer co-captain had already been named UD's MVP, the Pioneer Football League' North Division Defensive Player of the Year, and repeated as both a Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major All-America, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America.

Jones was UD's leading tackler in 2004 (88 hits) and he tied for team honors in passes broken up (5). He intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown. He finished his career with his best-ever game, getting a career-high 19 tackles, forcing three fumbles and batting away two passes.

The 12th UD player to be named an AFCA All-American, he is only the second who was also an Academic All-American.

Jones was also the only Pioneer Football League player named to the 2004 AFCA All-America Team.

The Flyers were 7-3 in 2004. They were ranked #5 in the Football Gazette NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major rankings, and sixth by the Sports Network.
