DAYTON'S "DIG FOR THE CURE" A SUCCESS TO THE SUSAN G. KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION

Oct. 17, 2005

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team collected $2,928.85 for the Greater Cincinnati affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation during its "Dig for the Cure" match on Saturday against Saint Louis.

Sponsors were given the opportunity to pledge money per dig earned by the Flyer team during the match or make a flat donation to the cause on October 15. During the match, Dayton collected 58 digs as a team during a thrilling five-game match that saw UD come back from an 0-2 deficit to beat the Billikens.

"The support of our fans toward this program in just another reason why I feel that UD fans are among the best in the country," Dayton Head Coach Tim Horsmon said. "Not only do they support our team on the court, but they are passionate about helping a good cause such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation."

The "Dig for the Cure" campaign was brought to UD by Atlantic 10 newcomer Charlotte who originally started the program in 2003 by 49ers Head Coach Lisa Marston. The 49ers have raised $3,000 in each of the first two years of the program, which has spread to all of the schools in Conference USA and is now getting started in Atlantic 10 Conference Schools as well.

"We were approached with the idea for this program by Charlotte Head Coach Lisa Marston and were glad to help out," Horsmon said. "The ideals of our university and the volleyball program are to be active members of the community and to help those in need. This program achieves both of those goals."

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the Foundation fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, the Komen Foundation has raised more than $740 million for the fight against breast cancer.
