Led by junior Tom Murphy and sophomore James O'Connell on Friday, the Flyers find themselves in position for a possible first place finish in Toledo this weekend. The Rockets of Toledo posted a perfect 5-0 record on day one, but the Flyers finished 4-1 behind strong play in the A Singles draw from both Murphy and O'Connell.
In a dual match against IUPUI, Murphy defeated Javier Saab 6-1, 6-3, as O'Connell cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ross Gehlhausen. Dayton senior Jamison Downs capped off a sweep over IUPUI in the singles draw with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ronnie Pedro.
Murphy and O'Connell were also victorious in the Flyers' next dual match against Illinois-Chicago. Murphy posted a convincing 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Paul Glendenning, as O'Connell clinched another UD win with a victory over Andy Lockhard, 6-4, 4-6 (12-10).
The third Flyer victory came in the B Singles contest against IUC. Although freshman Brad Roby fell 6-1, 1-6 (2-10) in his match, freshman Peyton and sophomore Chris Jones each won for Dayton, giving the Flyers the point. IUC is currently third overall with a 1-4 record.
UD fell 0-3 to Toledo in B Singles, but rebounded on the doubles court, earning their fourth win of the day. In a 3-0 defeat of IUPUI, Murphy and Downs improved to 5-1 together on the year as they defeated Saab and Gehlhausen 8-2. O'Connell and Peyton won handily, 8-1, while Roby and Jones pulled out a 9-8(5) win over Joe Harvath and Ronnie Pedro.
