ST. LOUIS - The University of Dayton men's soccer team jumped over the Charlotte 49ers and held on for a 3-1 win in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals Thursday night at Hermann Stadium at Saint Louis University. Dasan Robinson, Nate Darr and Terry Alvino each scored for UD. The fifth-seeded Flyers (11-5-3 overall) advance to the semifinals Friday night versus host and No. 1 seed Saint Louis at 8:30 p.m.

Dayton got on the board when a shot by Robinson (Elyria, OH) from a sharp angle deflected into the far post in the 13th minute. Damion Blackburn (Beavercreek, OH) picked up the assist after springing Robinson down the right side. It was the third goal of the season for Robinson.

Just under three minutes later, Blackburn took a restart from 25 yards out and placed a cross to the far post that Nate Darr (Centerville, OH) headed in for his first goal of the year. Darr's went parallel to the ground from six yards off the line and slipped the ball to the lower left side for the goal. 14:38

In the 28th minute, two of UD's player from St. Louis hooked up when midfielder Terry Alvino (St. Louis, MO) knocked home a rebound by freshman forward Joe Olwig (St. Louis, MO) for his sixth goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.

Dayton out-shot Charlotte (6-8-4) 7-3 in the first half, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal.

In the second, Charlotte got its first scoring opportunity when Floyd Franks ringed one off the post while the Flyers were playing a man down with Jarun on the sideline with an open cut.

Charlotte pressured with 22 minutes to go, as Charlotte's Adam Ruud, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 forward, was denied by UD senior goalkeeper Nick Tarkany (Miamisburg, OH) twice. Ruud's first attempt was a one-timer from 10 yards which Tarkany blocked while diving to his right. Four minutes later, Ruud danced into the box and was denied point blank.

But Charlotte got on the board in the 75th minute, after a flurry in front, Blackburn headed the ball off the goal line and Charlotte's John Nabors slipped one in to cut the lead to 3-1. But, despite Charlottes 7-2 edge in shots in the second stanza, Dayton held on.

The Flyers out-shot Charlotte 13-10 for the match. Tarkany made five saves to pick up the win in net to improve to 6-2-2 on the year.

Dayton won in the A-10 Tournament for the first time since 1998, when UD won the Championship. UD advanced on penalty kicks in the 2000 semifinals in a draw versus George Washington before falling in the final, and the Flyers have been bounced in their first game in three of the past four seasons.
