PHILADELPHIA - Three Dayton athletes were honored by the Atlantic 10 with the Conference's weekly awards Monday. Baseball players William Benoit and Luke Trubee were named A-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively. Kelly Pohlman was also named A-10 Women's Track and Field Performer of the Week.
Benoit, a junior designated hitter from Louisville, Ky., led Dayton to a 2-1 start to its 2005 season as he hit .444 including at least one hit in all three games. He accounted for three of the Flyers' 13 runs in a season opening 13-8 win at Wofford. Benoit scored the game-winner in the second game and a lead off homer in the sixth inning to beat the Terriers 5-2. He finished off the weekend with two runs scored, three RBI and a .778 slugging percentage and a .545 on base mark.
Trubee, a junior right handed pitcher from Xenia, Ohio, held down homestanding Wofford with a complete game 5-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. He scattered seven hits while allowing two runs and striking out three Terrier batters. He currently holds a 2.57 ERA and opponents are batting just .241 against him.
Pohlman was the only Flyer to bring home a medal at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships on Saturday. She won the silver in the weight throw with a distance of 55-04.75 feet and placed fourth in the shot put with an effort of 46-10.25 feet. She has placed in the top three in the weight throw in all six meet this season and five of six time in the shot put.
The Flyer baseball team returns to action this weekend as it is scheduled to host its home opening series against Youngstown State on Saturday and Sunday. The Dayton women's track & field squad will head to Kingston, R.I. for the 2005 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships on the campus of University of Rhode Island.
