THE FLYERS SPLIT TWO GAMES AT EASTERN KENTUCKY INVITATIONAL

The University of Dayton Flyers began their season splitting their first two games. The Flyers won their first game of the season with a 2-1 win over Youngstown State in 8 innings, but were unable to knock off Eastern Kentucky as they fell in the second game 5-1.

In the first game,Youngstown scored first with a run in both the 3rd and 4th innings. A lead off walk by Christine Eggers followed by a walk for Cassie Gross began the 4th inning. Tamsyn Kellough doubled to right center field as Eggers and Gross crossed the plate to put the Flyers up 2.

It wasn't until the eighth inning when lead off batter Courtney Schafer doubled to center field and Ellie Malchow was sent in as a pinch runner on second. Christine Eggers then grounded out to the pitcher as Malchow was able to reach third. Senior Cassie Gross singled through the left side and Malchow was able to cross the plate for the winning run.

Pitching for the Flyers was Erin La Fayette through all eight innings, allowing only six hits with three strikeouts. The Flyers scored three runs while only getting three hits in the game.

The University of Dayton Softball team wasn't as lucky as they fell in the second game against Eastern Kentucky 5-1.

Dayton scored the first run of the game as Cassie Gross homered over the left field wall in the first inning.

Eastern Kentucky rallied back to score five runs over the next five innings. Melissa Meyher threw for 5 innings for the Flyers as she fanned three batters and only allowed two walks. Chelsea Grozenski came in to finish out the game allowing no hits, runs, walks and striking out two.

The Flyers warmed up their bats to make a come back and loaded the bases in the 7th but were unable to produce a run.

The Flyers fall to 1-1 on the season and will continue play in the EKU Tournament Sunday at 10:30 am as they take on IUPUI. The Flyers will return home to open their season in the Fairfield Inn Flyer Invitational March 4.
