FLYERS OPEN SERIES WITH 8-2 WIN OVER TEMPLE

April 9, 2005

DAYTON, OH - The University of Dayton baseball team moved to 5-2 in Atlantic 10 play with a 8-2 win over Temple Saturday in game one of a doubleheader at Time Warner Cable Stadium. Craig Stammen allowed just two runs on six hits for his fifth victory. William Benoit was three-for-four with three runs scored.

Michael Massa, Galen Schumm and Aaron Hepner each had two hits for UD, which improves to 18-11 overall.

In the bottom of the first, Massa led off with a triple into the right field corner and Schumm followed with a single through the left side for the 1-0 lead.

Dayton tacked on two more in the second. Benoit opened with a single, moved to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Craig Rohren, Hepner singled home Benoit. Rohren came in to score when the Temple shortstop threw away a fielder's choice by Massa.

The Flyers added two more runs in the third as Joe McSoley doubled to left, and Benoit singled him home. After Benoit moved up on an error, Bryan Chandler singled him home for a 5-0 lead.

Temple got on the board in the fifth, as Pete Colon doubled to left center. A walk, a passed ball and an RBI groundout was followed by an RBI single from Justin Cooper.

But Dayton struck back in the bottom of the inning as Benoit singled to open the frame, and Hepner and Massa added back-to-back singles. Massa stole second and when the throw carried into the outfield, Hepner trotted home. Schumm followed with a double to left for a three-run inning and an 8-2 lead.

Stammen put down six of the next seven Owl batters for the win. He went all seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Chris McCafferty takes the loss for Temple, going four and two-thirds with eight runs allow, seven earned, and all 11 UD hits. Eric Fritz mopped up with one and a third innings of hitless ball.

Dayton takes on the Owls in game two at 2:35, with the series concluding Sunday at noon.
