DAYTON, Ohio -  University of Dayton Head Baseball Coach Tony Vittorio announced the hiring of Cory Allen as assistant coach Monday. Allen, who played for Vittorio at UD from 2001-2003, will coach first base and work primarily with Dayton's hitters and outfielders.

"We are excited about having Cory back at Dayton," Vittorio said. "It is great to have a past Flyer with experience return to UD. Cory is a true baseball guy who loves to develop players. He is a great match for our program with his knowledge of the game and his loyalty to UD."

Allen returns to Dayton from Olney Central College where he was a pitching coach since graduating from UD with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication in 2003. His Olney Central teams won 91 games over the past two seasons and won the Great Rivers Athletic Conference Championship in both 2004 and 2005. His teams broke six school records and had five players drafted. Also two of his Olney Central products (Bobby Getty and Galen Schumm) came to UD at the beginning of the 2005 season.

"I am looking forward to becoming a full-time Flyer again this season," Allen said. "The skills and morals that I was taught at Dayton have remained with me since my playing days. Now I am excited for the opportunity to give back to players what I learned in my days at UD."

Allen also began his collegiate playing career at Olney Central where he pitched for two seasons. He was named to the All-Conference team as a freshman in 1999 and tallied 12 career wins and a .310 batting average for Olney before transferring to Dayton.

At UD, Allen was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week twice and was one of the Flyers' team captains during his senior season in 2003. He struck out 42 batters in 78 innings pitched in two seasons for the Flyers. Allen led the Flyers to a then-school-record 32 wins in 2001 and the program's first ever trip to the Atlantic 10 Championships.

Allen is a native of Sullivan, Illinois where he led Sullivan High School to a State Runner-up finish as senior in 1998. He graduated with the fourth most career strikeouts (491) of any pitcher in Illinois High School history.
