GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Dayton battled with #8 Florida for the first two games, but could not get by the Gators on their home court Friday and fell 0-3 (25-30, 26-30, 16-30) on the opening day of the Aquafina Volleyball Invitational.
The loss dropped the Flyers to 2-2 on the year while the Gators improved to 2-0.
Dayton was out hit by Florida .306 to .164 in the match overall, but sophomore Amanda Kenny continued her hot play of the young season with 11 kills while hitting .333.
Classmate Robynne Green and junior All-America candidate Faye Barhorst added nine kills each while contributing six digs and a block assist respectively.
Senior Nicole Schott led the Flyers with 22 assists and was complimented by 11 assists from red shirt freshman Erin Schroeder.
Defensively, UD was paced by 14 assists from sophomore libero
Adrienne Green.
The Flyers hung with the homestanding Gators in a tightly played game one, but fell to UF 30-25 after nine ties and five lead changes. No team led by more than three before the teams were tied at 22-22. The Gators then used a four-point run to take a 26-22 advantage and rode the momentum gained there to win 30-25. Florida out hit Dayton .139 to .105 and led with 14 kills to UD's 11 in the opening game. Barhorst and Robynne Green had four kills a piece while Kenny added three of her own. The setting tandem of Schott and Schroeder had five assists each for Dayton.
Florida also took the second game 30-26 despite seven kills from Amanda Kenny for Dayton in a tightly contested game. Schott took advantage with 10 assists in the second game while Schroeder added four. Barhorst and Robynne Green pitched in with three kills each but with the score knotted at 19-all UF rallied to take a 25-22 advantage en route to a 30-26 victory.
UF began to play towards its No. 8 ranking in the third game and opened to a 21-9 lead before closing out the match with a 30-16 win in game three. The Gators out hit the Flyers .545 to .154 and no Dayton player had more than two kills in the final game of the match.
Dayton resumes play in the Aquafina Volleyball Invitational this afternoon with a 5:30 p.m. match against #15 UC Santa Barbara. The Flyers will then face Missouri State Saturday at 1 p.m. On Friday morning, UCSB survived a scare from MSU and came back from down 0-2 to win 3-2.
