Dayton soccer senior midfielder Dasan Robinson was selected twenty-second in the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft by the Chicago Fire Thursday. The Fire have drafted a UD player in three straight years.
Robinson, a native of Elyria, OH, started all twenty of the Flyer's games this year and started sixty-three games in his career at Dayton, starting 92 percent of his games played as a Flyer. Robinson played as a midfielder this year but also played as a defender and as a forward in his early days in Dayton. Robinson was tied for third in assists (seven) in the league and first on the team.
Robinson will have the chance to play with old teammate and Fire forward Chris Rolfe. Robinson and Rolfe played together for three years in Dayton before Rolfe was drafted last season. In 2003, defender Denny Clanton was selected by the Fire. The Fire finished the season runner up in the eastern conference with an 8-5-3 record.
The player pool was made up of talent that went unselected in last Friday's MLS SuperDraft, as well as additional players nominated by the clubs. All players who were eligible and not selected in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft - which was held on Friday, Jan. 20 - and additional players nominated by teams were eligible for selection in the MLS Supplemental Draft. The Supplemental Draft was added in 2005 to help MLS teams fill out rosters that were expanded to 28 players. Eighteen of those will be considered members of the senior roster, while the remaining 10 will be part of the developmental roster. Developmental players do not count against the MLS salary cap.
All 12 MLS teams will soon begin their preseason training camps. The 2006 MLS season will begin on April 1, with all 12 teams in action on the opening weekend.
