Despite a game-high 27 points from Jennifer Strong, Dayton could not overcome the hot shooting of the visiting Ohio Legends in a 78-67 loss to end its exhibition season. Strong connected on 10-of-18 shots from the field, but it was not enough to defeat an Ohio Legends squad that connected on 47 percent of its shots.
Jennifer was great tonight, but for us to be successful we need to get more from other people," UD Head Coach Jim Jabir said. "When we play well, we get contributions from everyone in our lineup."
Junior Brittany Holterman added 13 points for the Flyers in a losing effort while classmate Nikki Oakland collected a team-best seven rebounds to go along with eight points.
The Legends were consistent in their shooting at 47 percent from the floor and 52 percent from the free-throw line. Erica Glover (Akron '00) and Kimberly Wilburn (OSU '06) were OL's leading scorers with 17 and 14 points respectively. Latonya McDole (Kentucky '02) also scored in double figures with 12. Larecha Jones (Ohio State '95) added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
UD got on board in the first half when Oakland was fed down low for a bucket just 30 seconds into the game. Not long after that Holterman connected on a jumper. Then with a steal at the 18:10 mark, Holterman scored again on breakaway to give UD a four-point lead just two minutes into the game.
Glover scored the first six points of the game for the Ohio Legends. Jennifer Strong, didn't let the Legends keep their lead for long; as she scored the next seven points in the game, connecting on a pair of buckets and a three from the elbow. Strong's three gave UD a two-point lead (13-11) at the 12:35 mark.
The two teams traded baskets back and forth for the remainder of the first half keeping it a tight game. Just one minute before halftime, McDole of the Legends brought the game within one point. A layup by UD's Oakland gave the Flyers hope of leading at the half but, OL's Glover connected on a three-pointer giving the Legends a two-point edge at halftime (36-34).
The Legends went on a 9-2 run at the beginning of the second half until Strong sunk a three at 16:13. The Flyers' leading scorer then went up for a layup at the 14:22 mark to bring the score to 41-50, but the Legends answered back stretching their lead to 15 points at 10:30 on layup from Glover. Although the Flyers attempted a full court press they could only wear down the Legends lead to 10. The veteran players of the Legends ultimately pulled off the victory, 78-67.
The Flyers open their regular season on the road at the Cardinal Classic this weekend. UD takes on host Louisville on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Games with Memphis and Winthrop follow on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.
