The University of Dayton has placed five Flyer football players on the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team, it was announced Thursday. The Dayton list included two first-team selections.
Junior safety Brandon Cramer (Toledo, OH) was a repeat selection on the first team. Senior tailback Brandon Godsey (Vandalia, OH) joined Cramer on the first team. Cramer carries a double major of bio-chemistry and pre-med. Godsey is a pre-med major.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is the first step in selecting this year's Academic All-America team. Everyone named to the district first teams appears on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America national ballot.
Junior safety Tyler Blue (Danville, IL), senior defensive tackle Chad Burton (Germantown, OH) and senior linebacker Brian Kelly (Cincinnati, OH) were named second team all-district. Blue is a journalism and religious studies major, Burton is majoring in civil engineering, and Kelly is a pre-med major.
The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I-A and I-AA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
At least one University of Dayton student-athlete has been named an Academic All-American for 22 straight years, which includes Cramer, who was on the second team last year. Overall, UD has had 44 football Academic All-Americans, matching Notre Dame. Among schools currently playing Division I football, only Nebraska (81) has had more.
