CLARKSVILLE, TN -
Bobby Getty and
Roberto Ramos each scored twice in support on a stellar pitching performance by
Luke Trubee as Dayton earned its first win of the season, 5-4, over Illinois State in the opening game of the APSU Invitational on Friday.
Getty was 2-for-3 with the game-winning two-run homer in the ninth. He finshed with a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and two runs scored to go along with his first home run of the season for the Flyers (1-2).
Ramos was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI in support of Trubee who allowed just two runs on six hits over 8.1 innings pitched. The senior righthander struck out nine batters while surrendering just one walk.
Although UD was out hit by ISU, 8-5, the Flyers made the most of two Redbird errors and also had a run scored by
Josh Burt in the victory.
Illinois State got its offense going quickly in the bottom of the first as leadoff batter Matt Bolt doubled to right center. After a ground out moved him to third, Bolt came home for the game's first run on a single to right field by Ryan Anetsberger. From there, Trubee took control as he picked off Anetsberger and then struck out another Redbird to close out the first down, 1-0.
Dayton evened the score with a two-out rally in the top of the second that began with a walk by Burt.
Michael DeLuca followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second. Ramos then delivered the game-tying hit with a single down the left field line to drive in DeLuca from second and knot the score at 1-1.
The Flyers built a two-run lead in the fifth in a rally that began with Ramos and Getty on second and first respectively with one out. The duo stole third and second before Ramos came home on a passed ball for a 2-1 Dayton lead. Then
Bryan Chandler reached on an ISU error that allowed Getty to move to third. Finally, Getty came home on a double steal that sent Chandler to second a put the Flyers on top 3-1.
UD added another two runs in the top of the ninth as Getty smacked a two-run home run to left center that also sent in Ramos for a 5-1 Dayton lead entering the final at bat.
Trubee cruised until the ninth inning as he struck out eight through the first eight innings and allowed just six base runners, three of which came in the first frame. After striking out the first ISU batter, Trubee surrendered a single before giving way to
Craig Rohren to close out the game.
The Redbirds rallied with another single and a three-run homer by Jesse Griswold, but Rohren drew a ground out for a 5-4 Flyer victory.
