FLYERS SWEEP COLONIALS, MOVE WITHIN A GAME OF FINAL A-10 SPOT

April 15, 2006

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - Melissa Myher won both games of a doubleheader against George Washington, as UD topped the Colonials 4-1 in game one, and held on for a 3-2 game two win. The Flyers are now 12-21 on the year, 6-6 in the Atlantic 10. Laura Matthews was two-for-five with a pair of runs batted in, Ellie Malchow added three RBI.

At 6-6 in the Atlantic 10, UD is one game back of the fourth place in the A-10 for the final spot in the conference tournament with eight games remaining. The Flyers are tied for sixth, with UD's next A-10 opponent, St. Bonaventure, in fourth with a 7-5 league mark.

The Flyers took game one, 4-1 behind a three RBI from Malchow. In the top of the second, Tamsyn Kellough walked to lead off the ining, and after an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt, Matthews walked to load the bases. Malchow doubled to right center, plating two runs, but Matthews was cut down at the plate to end the inning.

The Flyers added two more in the fourth. Kellough singled to left field to open the inning, and after another GW miscue, Matthews singled to right center for a 3-0 lead. Malchow followed with a sacrifice fly for a four-run lead.

GW broke the shutout in the sixth. The inning began with an error and a single, but catcher Shalyn Adams erased a runner attempting to steal. However, an error on the next play gave the Colonials an unearned run. Myher escaped without further damage and after giving up a walk in the seventh, put down the Colonials to close out the game.

Myher scattered seven hits and struck out four for her first win.

Dayton jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning of game two. Christine Eggers and Adams hit back-to-back singles to start the game, and stole a run when Adams stole second base, allowing Eggers to take home. Tami Roudebush singled to send Adams to third and set up the first and third double-steal attempt again. Roudebush made it to second and Adams raced home on the throw for the double steal and a 2-0 lead. Matthews ripped a single to right to plate Roudebush for all the runs the Flyers would need.

GW picked up a run in the second, stringing three hits together, including an RBI single down the left field line by Teresa Thomas. The Colonials threatened again in the sixth when Jackie Yaniga homered to left field. After a single and a walk, Myher induced a fielder's choice from Chrysanthi Halkiotis to strand two runners on base.

Eggers was two-for-four in game two with a run scored, and Roudebush went two-for-three with a run scored. Adams finished game two one-for-four with a pair of steals and run scored.

Myher (6-11) struck out two in the night cap, scattering 10 hits, but left 10 GW runners on the bases as the Flyers were flawless in the field. She lowered her ERA to 3.37 with two earned runs in 14 innings on the day.

Dayton is at Ball State on Monday for a non-conference twin bill at 2 p.m. before returning to UD Softball Stadium to face Morehead State on Thursday at 3 p.m.
