Dayton, Ohio -
The University of Dayton women's soccer team came up short in a 1-0 loss to the University of Michigan on Friday afternoon at Baujan Field. The Flyers had trouble finding their rhythm in their home opener as they fall to 0-2-2 on the season.
After a slow start to the game by both sides, the Flyers picked up play in the 14th minute when Stephanie Wurth hit a shot that was blocked just wide by the Wolverines. On the ensuing corner, freshman Colleen Gibson nearly put UD on the board when her header sailed just past the left post for a Michigan goal kick.
The Maize and Blue struck the game-winner in the 29th minute on a goal by Katie Miler. UM's Melissa Dobbyn received a pass at the top of the box and fired a shot off the left goal post which fell to Miler who then placed the ball past Dayton goalie Niki Reed.
In the second half the Flyers edged a little closer but still could not find the back of the net. In the 67th minute sophomore Annette Bonasso nearly caught the Wolverines goalie off-guard by lofting a shot from 35-yards out, but her shot was tipped just over the bar. One minute later, UD's Courtney Sirmans almost tied the game when she sent a bending freekick from 30-yards out over Michigan's goalie that hit the crossbar with 22:24 left in match.
The Flyers and the Wolverines were even on shots for the game at 11 a piece, and drew even with shots on goal as well with three each. The shutout marks the first for Dayton in the 2006 season.
The UD women will look for their first win of the season on Sunday as they play host to Illinois State University at 10 a.m. at Baujan Field.
