University of Dayton senior quarterback Kevin Hoyng has been named the Offensive Player of the Week by the Pioneer Football League and the Sports Network after leading the Flyers to the 34-27 win at Drake on Saturday that clinched a share of the PFL championship for UD and earned them a berth in the Gridiron Classic on December 1.
It was the second such honor in the last three weeks for Hoyng. He was PFL and CollegeSportsReport.com national player of the week on October 29.
Hoyng, a 2003 graduate of Coldwater High School in Coldwater, Ohio, led the Flyers to 33 first downs and 552 yards in total offense. Hoyng personally accounted for 453 yards total offense and three touchdowns in the victory. He completed 33-of-43 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns, and 93 yards in 22 carries. In the game's decisive fourth quarter, he was eight-for-nine passing, including a perfect seven-for-seven on UD's final touchdown drive.
This season, Hoyng has completed 64.0% of his passes (217 of 339) for 3,001 yards and 28 TD's. All of those passing numbers are Flyer single-season records. He also leads the team in rushing (625 yards) and scoring (54 points). He is third nationally in FCS football in total offense (329.64 yards per game).
UD is 10-1 on the season, and is ranked on top of the FCS Mid-Major rankings. Dayton is also ranked 24th in this week's FCS Coaches Poll, and received votes in the AGS and Sports Network FCS polls.
The Flyers will host either Albany or Central Connecticut State in the Gridiron Classic on December 1 at Welcome Stadium.
