MILWAUKEE - Senior Karah Cloxton drained four free throws in the final minute of play including two with 14.4 seconds remaining as the Dayton women's basketball team pulled out a 56-55 victory at Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Monday.
The Flyers won their third straight game to lift their record to 3-2 overall behind a team-high 15 points from Kiki Lund. The senior matched her season-high by hitting 5-of-7 shots from three-point range to go along with three assists, three rebounds and one steal.
Sophomore Kendel Ross added nine points and grabbed five rebounds and a steal for the Flyers which made just 18-of-59 shots from the field in a game that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes.
Nikki Oakland and Karah Cloxton grabbed six boards a piece for Dayton, which pulled down 14 of its 37 rebounds on the offensive side of the court.
Brittany Holterman also contributed to the effort chipping in eight points, four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals while playing less than one hour from her hometown of Racine, WI.
Traci Edwards, the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, led all scorers with 22 points to go with eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Turquoise McCain and Jody Crumble also scored in double figures with 10 points and three rebounds each.
Defensively, Dayton forced 20 turnovers and had nine steals compared to the Panthers' four. Six different Flyers had at least a steal apiece. UD held UWM to 35.7 percent from the field (20-for-56)
The Panthers took an early lead with a 10-2 run to start the half. But Dayton answered back with two back-to-back baskets from Kiki Lund and Kendel Ross. The two teams traded baskets as the Flyers tied it up for the first time at 10:55 behind a breakaway layup from Ross.
Both teams would remain scoreless for nearly a three minute span until Ross was sent to the line and connected on two baskets for Dayton's first lead of the game, 20-19.
The game remained close as both teams missed a combined total of 24 shots until Lund hit a three with 20 seconds left to play in the half. However, Wisconsin's McCain hit a buzzer-beater to tie it up 24-24 going into the locker room.
The Dayton "D" did a tremendous job shutting down the Panthers' two leading scorers Traci Edwards and Aubri Rote in the first frame. Edwards was held to just five points, while Rote went 0-for-2 from the field.
The second half was just as close as the first as the lead exchanged more than 13 times during the game. With 3:35 left to play Wisconsin-Milwaukee took the lead on a layup by McCain.
It looked as though the Panthers were pulling away, but Brittany Holterman connected on two jumpers and Karah Cloxton sunk four free throws in the final minutes of the game. Cloxton was fouled in the backcourt and sunk the two pivotal shots with 14.4 seconds left on the clock to seal the Flyer victory 56-55.
The Flyers will continue road play next weekend as the team travels to sunny California. Dayton will face San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 4 p.m. ET in non-conference action. The game can be followed with Gametracker on www.DaytonFlyers.com.
