Nov. 8, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, NC - Playing in her first game since October 12, sophomore Caitlin Proffitt scored the game-winner just 1:57 into overtime to lift the University of Dayton women's soccer team (13-4-3) over Saint Louis (10-6-2) in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championships on Thursday night in Charlotte, NC. The Flyers advance to the semifinals to take on No. 2 seed Fordham on Friday evening at 8 p.m. ET.

"It's awesome! There's a kid that's missed seven or eight games because of injuries and I think it's very fitting she got that one after getting a goal taken back," Coach Tucker said. "The girls pressured a lot all game and never gave up. I am so proud of them and the effort they gave out there tonight."

Dayton struck first just 16 minutes into the game on a bending cornerkick by senior Courtney Sirmans. Sirmans first goal of the year couldn't have come at a more crucial time as her kick sailed around Saint Louis goalkeeper Hannah Koesterer for the early 1-0 lead.

The Billikens struck back at the 28:37 mark on an impressive chip by Cassie Winchell. As UD goalkeeper Niki Reed chased a lose ball to the corner of the field, Winchell beat her to the mark and lofted the ball over her head during her retreat to the net to notch the match at one apiece.

Proffitt almost gave the Flyers the win with 40 seconds left in the second half as she snuck past the SLU defense to head in a goal but her goal was called back for being offsides.

Despite giving up a goal Reed, who was named A-10 Defender of the Year just a day ago, had a monstrous game in the net for the Flyers as she saved 10 of 17 Billiken shots, including a diving grab with 10 minutes left in regulation denying Saint Louis forward Julia Bradenburg a tally.

The Flyer offense pressed hard all game putting up 13 shots (two off the crossbar and one off the post), five of those being on goal.
