DAYTON, Ohio - Behind a season high 11 sacks by the UD defense, the Dayton Flyers cruised to a 40-0 win over the Central State Marauders.
The UD defense enjoyed a marvelous day forcing three turnovers and limited Central State to 53 total yards as the Flyers improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 at home. It's also the first shutout since the Flyers held Austin Peay scoreless on Sept. 17, 2005.
The Vossler brothers came up big for Dayton as cornerback Corey Vossler returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown and defensive end Scott Vossler added 12 tackles, three sacks and forced fumble.
Linebacker Brian Kelly added 10 tackles while defensive lineman Sean Heenan added six tackles and two and a half sacks.
On the offensive end, quarterback Kevin Hoyng accounted for 266 total yards and three touchdowns with two in the air and one on the ground. J Michael Jonard caught six passes for 146 yards and both of Hoyng's touchdowns.
Dayton, wearing their 1950 throwback jerseys, jumped out to a commanding 26-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. The scoring began when Jack O'Dell took a pitch from Hoyng and scampered to the corner of the end zone giving UD a 7-0 first quarter advantage.
The Flyers caught a special teams break when Frank Kohstall covered up a Central State punt that hit off the Marauder offensive line in the end zone to give UD a 13-0 lead. Less than six minutes later, Hoyng scampered out of the pocket and reached the end zone on an 11-yard run to put the Flyers ahead 19-0 with two missed extra points.
On the ensuing Central State possession, Vossler picked off a pass near the 50 yard line and raced down the left side to put the Flyers ahead by 26.
On the opening possession of the second half, the Flyers connected again this time with Hoyng going to the air for an 18-yard strike with Jonard to help UD go ahead 33-0. Hoyng connected with Jonard again on an 83-yard pass down the right side for the final score of the game.
But it was the Flyer defense that kept things going stopping the Marauders twice on downs in the second half. For Central State, running back Derrick Moss was held to 46 yards on 17 carries and quarterback Chris Clark was 11-for-21 for 64 yards and one interception.
Dayton's offense totaled 350 total yards with 96 of them coming on the ground. UD also held a 21-12 advantage on first downs and converted 5-of-13 third downs.
UD begins a two-game road swing on Saturday, Sept. 22 against the Fordham Rams starting at 1 p.m. ET.
