SIX FLYERS TABBED TO A-10 HONOR ROLL

Oct. 14, 2008

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton Flyers capped off a successful week by having six athletes named to the Atlantic 10 Sports Honor Roll for October 13. The honor roll recognizes individual accomplishments of student-athletes during the week of Oct. 6-12.

The six awards marks the most UD has ever had named to the A-10 Fall Sports Honor Roll in the same week. It is also the most that any A-10 school has placed on the list this year. Charlotte (Oct. 6), Saint Joseph's (Oct. 6), Saint Louis (Sept. 8) and Richmond (Sept. 2) have placed four on the Honor Roll in a single week.

The following athletes represented Dayton: men's golfers Zach Glassman and Michael Oberschmidt, men's soccer player Alex Torda, women's cross country athletes Maureen Bulgrin and Elissa Mason, and women's volleyball player Valerie Akerhielm.

Glassman and Oberschmidt were honored with the Player and Rookie of the Week awards after leading the Flyers to their first championship in three seasons. Glassman won the individual medalist award at the 2008 Leo Keenan Invitational. He won the tournament after shooting back-to-back rounds of 71 for his first career individual championship as well. Oberschmidt capitalized on his first round 76 with a 79 in round two to tie for 32nd overall and help UD finish with a team score of 593, edging out Temple by one stroke.

Torda was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the opening weekend of conference play. Torda led all league players with seven points, amassing three goals and an assist as the Dayton Flyers improved to 8-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the A-10. The Hermann Trophy Watch candidate scored two goals in Dayton's 4-3 win against Richmond on Friday night. He followed that performance with a goal and the game-winning assist against George Washington.

Bulgrin and Mason both earned Atlantic 10 Women's Cross Country honors this week as Bulgrin was named Performer of the Week for the third time this season and Mason earned Rookie of the Week honors. Bulgrin is coming off a 10th place finish (out of 288) at the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday where she clocked in at 18:35. She has led UD in four out of five races this season and has earned A-10 Performer of the Week honors three times this year. Mason has finished in the top five for UD in three races. She scored for the Flyers in her second straight race with a time of 19:30.9 at the All-Ohio meet.

Akerhielm was named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Week after helping the University of Dayton Flyers to a 2-1 record last week, which included victories over Temple and La Salle to extend their conference winning streak four consecutive victories and are unbeaten at 4-0.

Against the BIG EAST's Cincinnati Bearcats, Akerhielm had 20 digs, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over the Temple Owls, Akerhielm added nine more digs. She capped off the weekend with 11 digs in a 3-0 sweep of the La Salle Explorers.
