BUIES CREEK, NC - Visiting Dayton came from behind with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but lost its season opener at Campbell on a walk-off home run, 7-5 in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday.
UD out hit CU 12-11 with both teams collected three extra-base hits, but Dayton stranded 10 runners on base while Campbell left only four on the afternoon.
Marshall MacDonald had a solid Flyer debut with a 3-for-5 game at the plate that included two doubles, a run scored and three RBI.
Two others had multi-hit performances in their UD debuts as Ryan Nevill was 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored while Jimmy Roesinger went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Senior Kevin Miller also singled twice for the Flyers which picked up a runs from Ryan Nevill and Scott Dunwoody as well as an RBI from Cole Tyrell.
Junior Sean Finn started the season on the mound for Dayton and allowed three runs, just two of which were earned, on three hits. He struck out one batter and walked three in 3.1 innings pitched.
Senior Alex Dye came out of the bullpen to give up only one run on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 4.2 innings pitched.
Classmate Lucas Farden came in for the ninth inning and surrendered three runs on three hits including the game-ending two-run home run.
The Flyers got off to a good start as Jacob Spaeth drew a leadoff walk. Jimmy Roesinger traded spots with Spaeth on a fielder's choice that was followed by a Scott Dunwoody single. Roesinger was retired on a double steal that allowed Dunwoody to advance to second base. Marshall MacDonald drove him home from there with an RBI single for a 1-0 Dayton lead.
Campbell came back to score two runs on one hit and one Flyer error in the bottom of the first, but Dayton would even the score in the third inning with a run of its own. Jimmy Roesinger singled to center field to start the frame and advanced to third on back-to-back ground outs. UD took advantage of another two-out RBI as Cole Tyrell singled to knot the score at 2-2.
The Fighting Camels went ahead again with a run in the fourth, but a pair of Flyer extra base hits would swing the momentum again towards UD. Marshall MacDonald opened the fifth inning with a double to left centerfield. After one out, Ryan Nevill smacked a double of his own to left field to plate MacDonald and even the score again at 3-all.
Campbell took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double of its own and forced Dayton into a ninth-inning rally.
Jacob Spaeth started the ninth by reaching on an error by the Fighting Camel shortstop that allowed him to go all the way to second base. After a pitching change, UD put runners on the corners with a single by Jimmy Roesinger. After one out, Roesinger stole second base to put two runners into scoring position with only one out. Marshall MacDonald struck again with a two-RBI double that put the Flyers on top 5-4.
The lead would be short lived however as Campbell used a leadoff single and a two-out RBI base hit to even the score before Brandon Scott hit a two-run homer to left centerfield for a 7-5 victory for the Fighting Camels.
