DAYTON, Ohio -
The Dayton Flyers will look to improve upon last year's seventh place finish at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend on the campus of the University of Massachusetts beginning Saturday.
Fans can follow the live action of the two-day meet via pay-per-view video at www.Atlantic10.org. Results will be posted on www.DaytonFlyers.com shortly after the meet has concluded.
UD has enjoyed a successful 2007-08 season that included a program-best second place finish at the Conference Indoor Championship in Kingston, RI. The team has finished third or better in four out of six meets that count team scoring.
Freshman Johnna Zaccari has been solid in the throwing events for UD. Zaccari holds the top four outdoor throws in shot put for the team this year, including a personal best throw of 44-06.75 at the Miami University Team Challenge. She also won the shot put title at the A-10 Indoor Championship earlier in the campaign.
UD's freshmen distance runners are fresh off a successful meet last week in Hillsdale, MI, where Brigitte Sherman and Liz Coorey placed fifth and seventh in the 1,500 meter run, and Maureen Bulgrin secured seventh place in the 3,000 meter run. Sherman has finished seventh or better four times this outdoor season in the 1,500 meter run.
In the sprints, expect sophomore Lauren McCormick and freshman Ashley Cattran to make noise. McCormick placed sixth in the 100 meter dash last year, and has shown improvement this season in that event. She placed second at the Miami University Team Challenge, and holds the team's top two outdoor times.
Cattran has shined in the 400 meter dash this outdoor season with three top-three finishes and a victory at the Miami University Team Challenge. Her top time is 56.08, which came at the All-Ohio Championship.
Junior Andrea Cornell and sophomore Emma Steinmetz have led the way in hurdle events this season. Cornell set a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.55 at the Stan Lyons Invitational, where she placed fifth. Steinmetz owns the team's top two times in the 400 meter hurdles, including a personal record 1:08.12.
In other events this year, junior Anne Oltman has tallied one first place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and freshman Emily Overmyer has one victory in discus throw.
In 2006, UD recorded its all-time best finish of fourth place at the A-10 Championship. They won three gold medals, two of which were won by current team member Amy Kremer.
For the second consecutive year, live audio and video streaming of the Championship will be available for $7.95 per day. Annual subscribers to All-Access for A-10 teams participating in the Championship and XXL annual subscribers will be able to view the action at no charge.
