Complete Day One Results in PDF Format 
AMHERST, MA - The University of Dayton women's track and field squad has put itself in position for its best finish in program history with a solid start on Saturday at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships. The Flyers are currently second out of 12 teams with 51.5 points, which is just two shy of first-place Rhode Island and 4.5 ahead of two-time defending champion Charlotte.
Dayton's best ever finish came in 2006 when UD placed fourth. The Flyers are poised to improve upon last season's seventh place effort following a strong effort in a number of field events.
UD had second and fourth place finishers in the high jump as Megan Sweeney cleared 5'5" and Tiffany Maske jumped 5'3".
The Flyers also has three scoring competitors in the pole vault as Pembroke Strickland led the way by placing second with a mark of 10'6". Katie DeVault also cleared 10'6" to place fifth while Melissa Walls surpassed the bar at 10'0" to finish sixth.
Emily Overmyer and Molly McCarty combined to place fourth and fifth respectively in the discus. Overmyer threw 137'2" while McCarty's throw reached 128'8".
Dayton also had two top performers in the hammer throw. Mallory Barnes placed fifth at 156'6" while Kerry Allen also scored for UD with an eighth-place effort of 147'1".
Andrea Funk closed out a strong day in the field events with a seventh place finish in the long jump at an effort of 17'6.75".
Dayton also benefited from strong performances in two different events on the track.
UD had two runners near the front of the pack in the 3,000-meter steeplechase led by Anne Oltman who crossed the line at 11:15.73 to place fifth out of 14 competitors. Ellen Nienhaus was close behind and finished seventh at a time of 11:20.60.
The Flyer 4x800 meter relay squad also placed sixth to give Dayton a strong showing under first-year head coach Adam Steinwachs.
Dayton has a chance to add to its point total in a number of events when action resumes on Sunday.
UD boasts three of the top eight performers in the heptathlon, which completed four of its seven events on Saturday's opening day. Amy Kremer won the high jump while finishing second in the discus and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles to sit in second place with 2,554 points following the first day. Emma Steinmetz tied for second in the high jump and finished third in the hurdles to move just behind Kremer in third place with 2,520 points. Emily Krizmanic is currently in eighth place following four events.
Three Flyers have also qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. Lauren McCormick and Brittany Thomas will attempt to sprint their way to victory in the 100-meter dash while Andrea Cornell will take to the track in the hurdles on Sunday.
