Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - Homestanding Dayton fell behind early and did not have enough time to mount a comeback in a 12-3 loss to Ohio in a game that was shortened to five complete innings due to rain on Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Stadium.

The Flyers (28-21) did not record their first hit of the game until the fourth inning and finally put two runs on the board in the fourth and one more in the fifth, but could not overcome the Bobcats (22-27) as the game was called with two outs in the top of the sixth inning due to heavy rain.

Sophomore Cole Tyrell extended his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games with a single in the fifth inning. Tyrell reached base three times on the afternoon as he also walked and was hit by a pitch for the 14th time this season.

Jacob Spaeth was also hit by a pitch and collected the lone RBI of the game for Dayton with a groundout in the fourth inning. Spaeth has now been plunked 17 times, which is the third most in Flyer single-season history. He is just one shy of teammate Ryan Nevill for second place who has been drilled 18 times this year.

Marshall MacDonald and Myles Swartzel each doubled and scored a run while Kevin Miller singled, stole a base and scored for UD, which fell to 18-10 in non-conference games this season.

Junior Sean Finn suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings pitched. He fell to 3-3 on the season.

Freshman Tim Corbey followed him on the mound and allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out one and surrendering one walk in 2.0 innings.

Ryan Hill and Chris Beesley each hurled 0.1 inning to close out the game for UD. Hill gave up three unearned runs on two hits while recording a strikeout before giving way to Beesley who retired the only batter he faced.

Ohio got off to a big start with a run in the first and three more in the second. Matt Stiffler drove in three of the four runs with a homer to leadoff the game and another two-run shot in the third. The Bobcats would add on two more in the top of the third to build a 6-0 lead before the Flyers would answer back.

Myles Swartzel opened the UD fourth with a double off the centerfield wall and moved to third on a groundout. Jacob Spaeth followed with another groundball to second base to drive home Swartzel as get Dayton on the board. Kevin Miller extended the inning with a single left field. Then during the next at bat, Miller bluffed a steal attempt and was nearly caught off of first base, but the throw from the catcher ended up down the right field line. The ball rolled all the way into the corner and allowed Miller to score following a stolen base and a two-base error to make it a 6-2 game.

Ohio responded with six runs, four of which were unearned, on five hits in the top of the fifth inning to regain the momentum and a 12-2 lead. Dayton would come back to tally one more run in the bottom of the frame. Marshall MacDonald ledoff with a double to right centerfield. Cole Tyrell then singled to centerfield and the Bobcat outfielder misplayed the ball to allow MacDonald to score all the way from second and finish the day's scoring in a 12-3 Flyer loss.

Dayton will head to the "Keystone State" to face Temple in a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
