Sept. 15, 2008
University of Dayton senior defensive end Scott Vossler has been named Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week after leading the Flyers to a 23-20 win over Patriot League champion Fordham Saturday at Welcome Stadium. It was the second PFL honor in as many games for Vossler, who was the league's defensive player of the week the first week of the season.
Vossler, a 2004 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School in St. Marys, Ohio, blocked two kicks that both resulted in points for UD in the Fordham win. He blocked a punt that he picked up and ran back 35 yards for a touchdown, and then blocked a PAT that Joe Castaneda ran back for a defensive two-point conversion. The blocked PAT swung the game from an apparent one-touchdown margin to a ten-point spread.
Vossler also had seven tackles (five solo), 0.5 sacks, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and knocked down a pass in the contest. The punt block runback was his second touchdown of the year, and he is currently third in the PFL in scoring. In addition, he leads the league in sacks (1.75), is second in tackles for a loss (2.25) and is tied for second in solo tackles (5.5).
He is also the national sack leader in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.
The 2008 Flyer co-captain has picked up where he left off a year ago when he led UD, was second in the PFL and 14th nationally with 9.5 sacks. He was First Team All-PFL and First Team Sports Network FCS Mid-Major All-America last season.
Dayton is now 2-0 and hosts Robert Morris on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. ET.
