DAYTON, Ohio -
Senior Nicole Bateman recorded a career-high 23 kills as she helped the University of Dayton Flyers rally over the Louisville Cardinals 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 17-25, 18-16). Bateman transferred from Louisville after her freshman year.
The Flyers moved to 8-4 on the season behind Bateman's sixth double-double of the season (23 kills, 16 digs), while the BIG EAST favorite Cardinals slide to 4-6 after having an injury riddled start to the season. Bateman also received All-Tournament Honors for her performance at the Dayton Flyer Classic.
"This was a very competitive tournament for us," head coach Kelly Sheffield said. "To be able to battle back and stay focused was the difference in tonight's match."
Bethany Akerhielm continued her solid offensive attack throughout the remainder of the week. Akerhielm tallied 16 kills for a .294 hitting percentage. Akerhielm also added two block assists in UD's win on Saturday to net her All-Tournament honors.
Erin Schroeder notched 55 assists in the match while Lindsay Fletemier earned 13 kills and eight block assists in the victory over the Cardinals.
Freshman libero Valerie Akerhielm continued her strong performance for a second straight week. Akerhielm notched 16 digs and one assist in five sets for the Flyers. Mandy Robbe tied her career-best in digs with 18 on the night. Robbe also added two service aces and two assists for UD.
"I think this weekend showed us things that we have been improving on and other things that we can be working on," Valerie Akerhielm said.
