DAYTON, Ohio - While the University of Dayton baseball team is practicing this fall in preparation for the 2009 season, the Flyers took some time to support a worthy cause on October 1.
The UD chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority is very active on campus in promoting the fact that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the sorority also raises money for breast cancer research through its annual FREEFAHL Concert -- Forever Reminding and Educating Every Female About Healthy Living. To help Zeta Tau Alpha support Breast Cancer Awareness Month and promote the concert, several Flyer men's student-athletes wore pink t-shirts provided by the sorority around campus on Wednesday.
The entire baseball team participated in the promotion and took it one step further by actually wearing the shirts at practice.
"Community service is an important part of our program," Dayton head baseball coach Tony Vittorio said. "We were glad to help raise awareness on campus about this disease, and hopefully make the concert an even bigger success. Probably every player on our team knows someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer. It was a privilege for us to help out."
The FREEFAHL concert is Sunday, October 5 from 5-9:30 p.m. at the University of Dayton's ArtStreet amphitheater. Tickets are $10 and the event is open to the public. Featured artists include Urban Transit, Fred Shafer and Blessid Union of Souls. All proceeds go to breast cancer education and awareness. Last year, this event raised more than $8,700. In addition, the Flyers will be holding their fall weekend October 10-11. Festivities will include a golf outing, lunch and an opportunity to see the 2009 baseball team in action. For the latest on upcoming events and Flyer baseball news visit www.DaytonFlyers.com.
