University of Dayton senior Brandon Wingeier has been named to the 2009 Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team. Wingeier was one of 55 seniors selected. The winners were announced Friday at the FCS football championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The award was another for Wingeier, who had already been named a First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, and First Team All-Pioneer Football League.
Wingeier is a 2006 graduate of Newark High School in Newark, Ohio. He carries 3.78 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. He led the team in sacks in 2009 with 6.5. He also had 39 tackles (18 solo), 11.5 tackles for loss, two fumbles recovered, two QB hurries, one forced fumble and one interception which he returned 57 yards for a TD.
The Flyers were 9-2 this season, and finished tied for first in the Pioneer Football League. It was UD's 10th PFL championship (including ties) in the 17-year history of the PFL. The rest of the league has 12 titles combined.
Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution. A special Review Committee of Football Championship Subdivision athletics directors was responsible for selecting the all-star team and scholarship finalists.
