The University of Dayton baseball team improved to 36-15, tying the school for wins in a season, with a 12-5 win Tuesday at Eastern Kentucky. The Flyers matched the 36 wins originally set by the 2005 team that finished with a 36-23 record.
UD matched another single-season record when Jonathan Castine blasted his sixth home run of the season over the right field fence. That was Dayton's 71st home run of the season, tying the 71 bombs hit by the 1993 squad. In addition, the Flyers surpassed two more records for hits (608) and doubles (130) while tying the single-season RBI record with 389.
The Flyers opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning, and scored in six of the remaining seven innings. Ten of the 11 UD players with plate appearances had hits, and eight had RBI. Senior catcher Scott Dunwoody led the way with three RBI to go with his two-for-five day at the dish. Starting pitcher Eric Wagner improved to 6-0 with the win. Wagner scattered six hits in 6.1 innings, and Tim Corbey finished up with the final 2.2 innings.
Roesinger's single up the middle in the second sparked UD's scoring in the second inning. Roesinger drove home Tyrell on the play while Dunwoody knocked in a two run double to give UD the early 3-0 advantage.
The Colonels tried to keep pace leveling a sacrifice fly to pull within two, however, Dayton answered with a run of their own in the top of the third when Tyrell crossed the plate on a throwing error by the EKU pitcher.
The Flyers added three more runs through the seventh inning making it a 7-3 UD advantage heading into the seventh inning stretch.
Jake Hoover smacked home Dunsmore on a RBI double to right field. Dunwoody brought home Tyrell for his third run of the day with a base hit up the middle while Jacob Spaeth bunted Hoover home.
Dunsmore and Nevill scored in the top of the ninth pushing the Flyers to a 12-5 win.
Dayton will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at Xavier beginning Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The Flyers will be looking to secure the Atlantic 10 regular season championship, going into the series with a 20-4 A-10 record and a game-and-a-half lead on second-place Rhode Island.
