FAIRBORN, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team won its second consecutive match with a 2-1 double overtime victory against Wright State at Alumni Field Sunday. UD freshman Evan McCreary notched his first collegiate goal, but it was senior Sonny Renner who was the hero for the Flyers, scoring the golden goal in the 102nd minute.
"There is always an additional level of excitement to win in overtime," said UD Head Coach Dennis Currier. "It's when you find those guys who can step up to get that winning goal. It was a good feeling to hit that free kick.
"It feels good to get that second win in a row. We want to continue our improvement but we have to continue working on small things to keep winning," added Currier. "It's important to get confidence going. Today, we played well offensively and defensively at times. There are just the small things we need to clean up and if we do that we'll continue to be successful."
There was just one shot in the second overtime and that's all the Flyers would need. Renner scored his first goal of the season on a free kick from the top of the box with 101:29 showing on the clock; it was also the first game-winning goal of his career.
"Kissi did tremendously getting around the defender. Then the guy fouled him and gave us a free kick from about 20 yards out," said Renner. "I lost my head a little bit. All the guys came over to tackle everyone after the shot went in. It was a great moment and overall win with contributions by all the guys, a total team effort."
"Sonny has been working on free kicks after practice. He has a great shot he can hit around the wall," said Currier. "He hit it perfectly and hit it with pace. It beat the keeper easily and was a very good goal."
McCreary scored the first goal of the match, and the first of his career, in the 27th minute off the cross from senior Isaac Kissi. The Flyers took the 1-0 lead into halftime after both squads registered five shots and had four fouls in the first period.
"McCreary continues to get better. Every time he gets in the game he is a competitor," said Currier. "His hard work paid off tonight. He created other great chances that were near misses."
Kissi was a part of both goals for the Flyers.
"Kissi has been our most dangerous attacking player all year," said Currier. "Wright State had a low pressure defense and it was going to take good individual play to break them down. On the first goal he just dribbled through both layers with craftiness and was able to slot the ball back to Evan who had good shooting lane and placed it in the side netting."
Brad Bamberger had the game-tying goal for WSU on a header in the 65th minute after a Raiders' corner kick by Brian Cothern.
Dayton outshot the Raiders 16-13. UD's Peter Chilemena kept up his production, taking four shots, with three on goal, after scoring twice in Dayton's 4-3 win over Bowling Green Friday.
Freshman Josh Lavallee had seven saves in goal for the Flyers (2-3-1).
Dayton hosts SIU-Edwardsville next Friday, Sept. 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET at Baujan Field, following the Flyer women's soccer match against Temple at 6 p.m. All matches at Baujan Field are free admission this season.
