CINCINNATI – The Flyers shot a season-worst 26 percent from the floor in a 74-49 loss to No. 10 Xavier Saturday night at the Cintas Center. Dayton (16-5, 4-2 A-10), second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring offense, posted its lowest scoring tally of the season against the Musketeers.
Eleven different UD players found the scoring column.
Kristin Daugherty scored nine of her team-high 13 points in the first half for UD. She shot 2-for-6 from the field and sank four free throws, but the rest of the Flyers went 3-for-21 in the first half. After shooting just 18.5 percent in the first half the Flyers were down 33-20. Dayton started the game 1-of-9 from the field, Daugherty’s layup at the 18:11 minute mark the only UD field goal in the first eight minutes of play.
Xavier (16-3, 6-0 A-10) struggled as well in the first half, and led just 17-13 with 6:56 to play in the period. The Musketeers only connected on 35 percent from the floor, and that was boosted after they hit four of their last five shots in the final 1:49, including two treys by freshman Katie Rutan which gave Xavier its largest lead of the half, 31-17.
The Musketeers led by as many as 30 points late in the game. Amber Harris led Xavier with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Ta’Shia Phillips posted a double-double of her own with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Rutan added 16 points and Dee Dee Jernigan also reached double figures on the boards with 10 rebounds. XU won the battle of the boards, 56-30. This is just the fourth time this season Dayton has been outrebounded and only the second time this season the Flyers have been outrebounded by double digits.
The Flyers host Charlotte this Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. ET at UD Arena. Dayton is hosting “Math Day”, an event in which grade school students will participate in 20 different math-related stations throughout the UD Arena concourse from 9 a.m. until tip-off.
