Kalamazoo, MI The University of Dayton men’s tennis squad embarked on their second road trip of the season, taking on Western Michigan and Valparaiso in a double-header in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Dayton opened play on Saturday morning, dropping their first match of the weekend to #75 Western Michigan, 7-0. The Broncos, undefeated this season, are the first nationally-ranked team UD has faced. Unable to upset their first opponent, Dayton faced-off with Valparaiso later that afternoon.
The Flyers were off to a great start, taking an early 1-0 lead as they won two of the three doubles matches. Joe West and Matt Sherman, now 1-1 as a pair, defeated the Crusader’s Michael Woodson/Sidderth Mehta 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. Austin Weigand and Robert Salcedo downed the DeHerrera/Litscher duo at No. 3, 8-6.
Sophomore transfer Robbie McCallum’s three set victory over Kyle Stump (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) at the No. 3 singles position brought Dayton back within one, 3-2. McCallum posts a 2-2 singles record since joining Dayton in January.
The Flyers were defeated by Valpo 5-2, giving the Crusader’s their first win of the 2010 season.
Dayton hits the courts again this Saturday, Feb. 6, hosting Kennesaw State in their home-opener match of the year. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 pm E.T.
