UD WOMEN'S HOOPS TAKE PART IN SUPER SATURDAY

DAYTON, Ohio – Fans got their first look at the 2010-11 University of Dayton women’s basketball team Saturday at UD Arena.

“I thought we did some really good things tonight,” said UD Head Coach Jim Jabir. “Our practice squad is very good. In spurts we played very well.”

The Flyers played eight-minute halves against their practice players in front of a crowd of 5,200. The scrimmage was a part of Dayton’s Super Saturday.
“This was a really great atmosphere,” said Jabir. “I hope the fans saw that we can compete at a very high level.”

Super Saturday started with a 41-23 Flyer football win over Campbell, continued with a Dayton volleyball win over Charlotte at UD Arena (25-14, 26-24, 25-18), and following autograph sessions by the UD volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams, the women’s hoops team was introduced. Following the women’s scrimmage the UD men’s team faced off in an intrasquad scrimmage.

Olivia Applewhite, Justine Raterman, Aundrea Lindsey, Patrice Lalor and Kristin Daugherty started the scrimmage and helped the women to a 15-13 lead after the first period. Raterman, a junior, hit a three-pointer on UD’s first possession, and she finished the scrimmage with a team-high eight points in 10 minutes of action. Daugherty, a senior, had seven points in 10 minutes. Junior Patrice Lalor had five assists in nine minutes on the court.
Junior Elle Queen scored four points, while sophomores Brittany Wilson and Kari Daugherty each chipped in two points.

“Justine (Raterman) and Kristin (Daugherty) remained consistent for us. Patrice (Lalor) did a good job distributing the ball with five assists and just one turnover,” said Jabir. “Olivia (Applewhite) and Brittany (Wilson) have a chance to really help us more this year. Elle Queen has improved a lot too.”

Dayton is coming off a 25-8 record in 2009-10, a season in which the Flyers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UD lost just one player from that squad.

The Flyers play Gannon in an exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena. They open the 2010-11 regular season at home against Penn State on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
