DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women’s soccer team improved its Atlantic 10 regular season unbeaten streak to 17 games with a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island Friday night at Baujan Field.
The Flyers are 11-2 overall this season and remain undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 mark. UD has not lost an A-10 regular season game since 2008.
Senior Jerica DeWolfe got the Flyers on the board first with a beautiful finish in the lower 90 in the 15th minute set up by Juliana Libertin and Kelly Blumenschein.
The Rams answered less than a minute later as their leading scorer Kaylen Shimoda put away URI’s lone goal of the night in the 16th minute. It’s the first conference goal the UD defense has allowed this season. Prior to that, the defense of Kathleen Beljan, Alli Giner, Emily Kenyon, Kelsey Miller and goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers had not allowed a goal in 195 minutes.
In a physical match that saw 24 fouls by the Rams and nine by Dayton, it was a penalty kick by Blumenschein in the 52nd minute that proved to be a game-winner. The opportunity was made possible when sophomore Colleen Williams was brought down in the box.
Sophomore Alexis Garcia provided some cushion with a chip shot over the keeper on the assist from Williams in the 63rd minute of the match.
The Flyers have outscored A-10 opponents 9-1 in their first three matches.
Dayton continues conference play when it hosts UMass this Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. at Baujan Field. It’s the Flyers’ Think Pink match, and they will be selling Flyer women’s soccer pink T-shirts for $10 with all proceeds going to breast cancer research. It also marks UD’s last regular season home match of the year. Admission is free.
