DAYTON TAKES ON NO. 17 OHIO STATE IN NCAA SECOND ROUND

NCAA Bracket  |  Championship Central
The University of Dayton advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship for the second consecutive season and the fourth time overall, with a 3-0 win over Virginia Tech Friday. The Flyers play Ohio State, winners of the Big Ten championship, in Columbus, Ohio this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium for berth to the Sweet 16.

Alli Giner and Tori Oelschlager scored the first two goals and Colleen Williams scored her 18th goal of the season in Dayton’s 3-0 win over Virginia Tech, who knocked UD out of the NCAA tournament last season, 3-1 in the second round.

Williams’ 18 goals puts her in fourth place all-time at UD for goals in a single season. She is four and five back from Dayton great Missy Gregg (22 in 2000 and 23 in 1999). Karen Kazmaier is UD’s leader with 30, set in 1986. Williams’ 48 single-season points are also fourth all-time at UD behind Gregg (50 in 2000 and 57 in 1999) and Kazmaier’s 66 set in 1986.

Williams also dished the game-winning assist vs. the Hokies Friday night. It marks the sophomore’s 12th helper on the season; one away from UD’s single-season record of 13 held by Megan McKnight (2001).

Senior goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers has 11 shutouts this season, two away from record holder Katherine Boone, a sophomore on the team this season.

No. 17 Ohio State advanced to the second round with a 1-0 double overtime win over St. Francis, Pa. Friday night. Danielle Scoliere scored the goal in the 106th minute off an assist from Lauren Granberg. The game-winner was Scoliere's first career goal.

A win over the Buckeyes (15-4-1) would give the Flyers 20 victories this year, tying a program best set in 2004. A win would also send the Flyers to the Sweet 16 to tie Dayton’s best finish in the NCAA Tournament (2001 when UD was knocked out 3-1 by UCLA).

Dayton is 2-8-0 all-time against the Buckeyes.

The two teams have already met this season; Sept. 3, 2010 at Baujan Field. OSU’s Cassie Dickerson scored the lone goal of the match for the Buckeyes off the rebound of a free kick by Courtney Jenkins in the 49th minute. It was the first goal of the season for the Hermann Trophy Watch candidate. The loss to the Buckeyes was Dayton’s first regular season loss at Baujan Field since Sept. 14, 2008, a 1-0 loss to Rutgers. Dayton also has a candidate for the Hermann Trophy in junior defender Kathleen Beljan.

Prior to that the last time the two teams met was in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament and Ohio State came away with a 3-0 win. The Flyers’ last win against OSU came in 1997.

Tickets for Sunday's match are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium - cash only - the day of the game.

The winner advances to take on the winner of the Virginia/South Carolina match.
