FLYERS SEEK FIRST WIN AT MINNESOTA SUBWAY CLASSIC
The University of Dayton women’s basketball team is seeking its first win of the 2010-11 season in the Minnesota Subway Classic hosted by the Golden Gophers this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20-21 in Minneapolis. The Flyers open the tournament against South Dakota at 4:30 p.m. ET, following the Minnesota vs. Milwaukee game at 2 p.m. ET. The consolation game will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. followed by the championship game at 4:30 p.m.
FLYER NOTES
- Head Coach Jim Jabir needs five wins to become the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach at UD.
- Junior Justine Raterman leads UD with 22.5 ppg, which is tied for second in the A-10.
- Dayton’s 84.5 ppg is tied for first in the Atlantic 10, but the defense is allowing 93.0 ppg, last in the A-10.
- The Flyers lead the Atlantic 10 with 35 assists.
- UD’s 107 points vs. Penn State is by far the highest point total scored by an A-10 team this season. Xavier is the next closest with 85 vs. Michigan.
- The Flyers also have the most rebounds and assists in a single game this season by an A-10 team; 56 and 25 vs. Penn State.
LAST TIME OUT
The Flyers (0-2) fell 74-62 to No. 25/24 Michigan State in East Lansing in front of a crowd of 4,162. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Wilson led the Flyers in scoring with 16 points, and junior Justine Raterman (13 points), Olivia Applewhite (10), and Elle Queen (10) also had double figures for the Flyers, but the Spartans proved better from long range, hitting nine three-pointers to help down UD and improve to 2-0.
SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA
South Dakota has a 2-1 record, sandwiching two victories between a 73-40 loss to Kansas. USD downed Northern Colorado 62-57 in overtime in their opener and pounded Jamestown College, 76-37. Junior Amber Hegge leads the Coyotes with 15.0 ppg. Junior Jodie Boss, a 6-foot-4 center, has put up a team-best 9.3 rebounds per game and 5.0 blocks per game.
SCOUTING MILWAUKEE
The Panthers are 1-1 so far on the season, falling 76-59 to No. 9 Oklahoma and rebounding with an 82-69 win over Chicago State. Courtney Lindfors leads Milwaukee in scoring with 22.0 ppg and rebounding with 7.5 rpg. Angela Rodriguez has dished a team-high seven assists, but has a team-high 14 turnovers.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA
The Golden Gophers are 2-1 on the season. Minnesota downed Northern Illinois 79-58 to advance to the Best Buy Classic championship game where it lost 79-75 to Green Bay at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers are coming off a 73-63 win over Pittsburgh, also at Williams Arena. Kiara Buford leads the team with 19.7 ppg while Leah Cotton is averaging 15.3 ppg. Jackie Voigt is nearly averaging a double-double with a team-best 10.0 rpg and 9.0 ppg.
SERIES INFORMATION
- This is the first meeting between UD and South Dakota.
- UD is 0-2 against Minnesota; an 83-56 loss at Minneapolis on Dec. 1, 2001, and an 83-64 loss at UD Arena on 83-64.
- Dayton is 3-1 all-time against the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers, including an 86-52 win at UD Arena last year on Dec. 4, 2009.
