University of Dayton redshirt senior James Vercammen has been named to the AFCA Football Championship Subdivision Coaches’ All-America Team that was announced today by the American Football Coaches Association.
Vercammen, who plays the hybrid safety/linebacker position known as “Flyer” in the Dayton defensive schemes, was the top tackler on the team that is second in FCS football in rushing defense.Â
Vercammen had 100 tackles (57 solo), 13.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three fumbles forced, two pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery in 2010. UD allowed just 78.4 yards a game rushing.
The Flyers were 10-1 on the season, including a first-place finish in the Pioneer Football League after going 8-0 in the PFL. UD is ranked 23rd in the latest Sports Network poll and 25th in the final AFCA Coaches’ Poll.
Vercammen is a two-time First Team Pioneer Football League performer. He played on teams that finished a combined 39-7 and won at least a share of three PFL titles.
He is Dayton’s 10th AFCA All-American, and the first since Doug Jones in 2004. UD’s first AFCA All-American was current Flyer head coach Rick Chamberlin, who was named in 1978.
