NORFOLK, VIRGINIA - University of Dayton freshman point guard Juwan Staten was named the Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week for his play during the week ending December 5. It is his second A-10 Rookie Award this season.
Staten averaged 13.0 points and 6.5 assists while shooting .833 (10-12) from line in two games. He scored 12 points and had eight assists in UD’s come-from-behind win over Miami on Saturday. Staten sparked the comeback, tallying eight of his points and five of his assists in the second half, and sealed the victory by going 8-for-8 from the line in the game’s final two-and-a-half minutes. Staten also had 14 points and five assists in the Flyers’s mid-week loss to East Tennessee State.
He shared the honor with La Salle’s Tyreek Duren.
Staten is currently averaging 8.5 points and 6.6 assists per game. He leads the A 10 in assists. He also is the top freshman in the country (and is 13th overall) in assists per game. He was the first freshman to start at point guard for Dayton since Edwin Young started the first 12 games of the 1996 97 season.
Dayton, 6-2, will face Central Connecticut State on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7:00 p.m. ET in UD Arena.
