Home runs by senior Megan Lee and sophomore Lauren Nacke drive the Flyers (1-2) to their first win of the season, a 9-2 effort over UW-Green Bay (0-1).

Lee and Nacke led the offensive drive, each going 2 for 3 and a combined seven RBIs. Molly Meyer, Brandy Brown, and Kathleen Maloof all tallied one hit, giving the Flyers seven hits to Green Bay’s eight.

“For the first two games the girls really struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities but our offense came to life in the third game,” said Cara Clark-LaPlaca.

Dayton hit the ground running against Green Bay. In the bottom of the first Nacke hit a long ball to left that allowed Meyer, who was hit by a pitch earlier, to score. Then Brown doubled, advancing Nacke to third. Lee added a single driving in Nacke.

The Flyers looked to strike again in the fourth inning. An overthrow by third baseman Danielle Penderboom put Anne Maci on second. Lee then sent one soaring to left center clearing the bags and putting the Flyers up 5-1. Maloof repeated the effort with double up the middle and another error on Green Bay sent Maloof home. Nichols reached first on a fielder’s choice and a series of miscues gave the Flyers another run. With one on and two out, Nacki belted a two-run shot to top the inning off at 9-1.

The bats weren’t the only thing clicking for the Flyers, the pitchers also added to the success. Eva Rappe (1-1) earned her first win this season. Rappe allowed only two runs on seven hits and walked one. Sarah Wedel relieved Rappe in the seventh allowing only one hit.

“Our pitching had a solid performance, limiting them to only two runs that helped secure us a victory,” said Clark-LaPlaca.

Green Bay struggled to execute offensively. Although they had eight hits, they failed to score and left eight players on base. Their first run came in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Sara Juinon. The only other score was in the fourth when Danielle Peerenboom doubled, driving in Jessica Hnrcar.

The three Phoenix pitchers combined allowed nine runs, seven hits, (including to home runs) and one walk.

Earlier in the day, a late rally by the Flyers was not enough in a 3-2 loss to the North Dakota Fighting Sioux in game two of the UNI-Dome Classic.

The Flyers had five hits in the ball game. The seniors led the way with hits by Molly Meyer, Anne Maci, and Megan Lee with support from freshmen Kathleen Maloof and Carlyn Harlow. Freshman Amanda Daly (0-1) recorded her first loss. In seven innings she struck out seven and allowed only three hits.

Meyer started things immediately in the first inning when she cracked a home run giving the Flyers an early lead. The Sioux responded quickly with a run of their own off a triple by Kayelee Schoeny in the bottom of the first.

Things were in a stalemate until the fourth inning when North Dakota mustered up a two-hit, one-run inning. Followed by a one-run fifth inning that sealed the win for them.

Dayton’s offense struck again in the sixth inning. Maci started the inning by reaching first after North Dakota’s pitcher Hannah Borschel threw a wild one and hit Maci. Up next was Lee, she doubled to right-center, advancing Maci to third. With runners in scoring position, Kathleen Maloof pop-out to left driving in Maci and tightening up the score 2-3. The Flyers were unable to capitalize the rest of the inning leaving two stranded.

The Flyers finish off the UNI-Dome Classic tomorrow with back-to-back games. They play Valparaiso at 9 a.m. ET and South Dakota at 11 a.m. ET.
