FLYER XC OPENS SPRING SCHEDULE WITH STRONG PERFORMANCES

Competing in their first spring event of 2010 at the All-Ohio Indoor Championship, the University of Dayton men’s cross country team set two school records and narrowly missed a third at Bowling Green’s Perry Field House on Saturday, Feb. 13.

UD fielded athletes in five different events at the annual meet and had five individual top-10 finishes to go along with two school records and a third-place finish by the distance medley relay group.

Juniors Chris and Matt Lemon both eclipsed Mike Andersen’s 2007 record time of 8:39.47 in the 3,000-meter event. Chris crossed the finish line in 8:26.19 to scorch his teammate’s previous mark and finish first overall. His twin brother, Matt, was right on his heels and placed second with a time of 8:27.50 – the second-best time in school history in the 3K.

Flyer alum Tim Mulligan’s school record in the 5,000 meter run was also shattered on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Greg Roeth paced himself to a finish of 15:16.37, which bested Mulligan’s mark from 2002 (15:33) by 17 seconds. Roeth was followed closely in the 5K event by another rookie, Jeremy Schiele, who also pushed the former Flyer record and placed eighth overall in 15:33.63.

Another freshman, Kyle Lowry, also turned in a competitive time in the mile run, finishing seventh overall (4:27.21).

The Flyer freshman foursome of Schiele, Derek Bornhorst, Lowry and Roeth combined for a time a 10:40.2, which was just .7 seconds off the pace of a 13 year-old school record.

Dayton’s harriers will now have a little over a month off before their next spring competition, which will take place on March 20 at the University of Cincinnati’s Early Bird Relays.
