DAYTON TRACK AND FIELD LEADING IN ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER DAY ONE

Complete Results

KINGSTON, R.I. - On Friday, the University of Dayton’s track program opened up its most exciting weekend of the indoor season thus far as the team put up 63 team points to hold an early lead at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship meet.

The action, which began Friday, Feb. 19 on the campus of the University of Rhode Island, will wrap up Saturday. Most of the timed running event finals will take place and the conference crown will be determined at 3:30 p.m.

Friday, however, was host to a lot of exciting action for the Flyers. The finals of the 5000-meter run saw Dayton’s own Maureen Bulgrin take home first-place with a time of 17:12.33. The junior narrowly edged out the second-place finisher by one second.

A few more Flyers also enjoyed great success during this race, as sophomore Elissa Mason placed fifth overall with a time of 17:33.95. Mason was followed by sophomore Emily Zimmerman, who also scored for Dayton with her seventh-place finish (17:39.61).

As a group, the distance runners were also able to pick up a point in the Distance Medley Relay, where the Flyers fielded the eighth-place team.

As expected, the Flyers also scored a great deal of their points in the field events. Junior Mallory Burns continued her hot streak and outmatched her competition in the weight throw. She won the event with a distance of 65-11.50, which was over eight feet further than the second-place finisher and also a new school record. Luckily for Dayton, that second place finisher was also a Flyer. Kerry Allen finished runner-up with a final distance of 57-00.25. Senior Molly McCarty also scored in this event for Dayton, as she placed fourth with a final distance of 55-04.75.

Dayton was also able to capture points in the pole vault. With reigning A-10 indoor champion Courtney Siebenaller heavily favored in the event, UD freshman Katie Nageotte pulled off a surprise win. Nageotte’s height of 12-07.50 allowed her to squeak by Siebenaller for first-place, which was the rookie vaulter’s first victory as a Flyer.

UD will be back on the track tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., which will mark the beginning of the high jump finals. The trophy ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. EST. Stay tuned to DaytonFlyers.com for continuing coverage of the A-10 Championships, as the Flyers continue their quest for a first-ever conference crown.
