AVON, Ind. – When the pressure was on, Sean Keating sank the birdie putt he had been waiting for all year.
Keating’s birdie in the one-hole playoff helped the University of Dayton Flyers capture the 2010 Butler Spring Invitational.
Keating, who finished the one-day event with a 75, sank a 12-foot birdie putt to give the Flyers their first team championship since the 2008 Leo Keenan Invitational.
“We started off really well and after the first four holes or so, I thought we had a great chance at this tournament,” said head coach
Gip Hoagland, who earned his first tournament championship as a coach. “We faded a bit down the stretch, but we made the big shots when we needed to.”
After 18 holes of play, the Flyers tied with Loyola Chicago with a 292 team score.
Matt Buse and Jeff Hodapp led the UD attack each recording an even par 72, followed by a 73 from Chris Woeste. Michael Oberschmidt rounded out the scoring with an 81.
With the top four golfers competing in the playoff, Buse, Hodapp and Woeste each hit a strong tee shot and came away with a par score. Needing only a bogey to secure the title, Keating tallied his only birdie of the day to clinch the championship.
“Keating made the one when we really needed it,” Hoagland said. “It’s such a good feeling. The boys are excited, I’m excited and we got it done when we needed to.”
UD's 292 team score was the second best of the 2009-10 campaign.
Dayton also won the combined team championship with the UD women’s team. After the Dayton women’s team fired a 318 in their round, the Flyers took the co-ed title with a 610 team score, four strokes better than Loyola.
UD heads back on the course at the Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 5 and 6. The two-day event will take place in Spring Hill, Tenn.
