DAYTON, Ohio - After a league-wide vote by the conference’s sports information directors, junior track standout Ashley Cattran was announced as the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year for the outdoor track and field season on Thursday afternoon. Senior thrower Sarah Allen also was named amongst the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference selections after a successful conference meet, which saw the Flyers place second overall as a team.
Cattran had a particularly successful spring season and put an exclamation point on the tail end with her school record time of 4:26.6 in the 1,500-meter event at A-10’s. The Centerville, Oh. native placed second in that event and also scored another runner-up finish in the 800-meter run, where she recorded a time of 2:10.81. The mid-distance specialist also ran a leg on UD’s fifth-place 4x400 relay foursome at the conference championships. With a year of eligibility remaining, Cattran has a total of seven individual conference medals to her credit.
The fleet-footed junior boasts a 3.98 grade point average as a pre-medicine major, and also holds the distinction of being the only Flyer track and field runner to ever compete at the NCAA Championships. This is her third nomination to an A-10 Academic All-Conference team.
Allen also qualified after an outstanding final meet as a Flyer. The senior threw a season best mark of 45-11.75 place third and helped the team sweep the top three spots in the shot put event. A four-year letter-winner from Springboro, Oh., Allen accrued a total of four conference medals (one gold, two silver, one bronze) during her time as a member of an outstanding Flyer field crew. She also graduates with a near-perfect 3.92 grade point average in her chosen major of psychology.
