BOX SCORE
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton Flyers were unable to keep the ninth-inning magic going for a second day in a row, as they dropped the Sunday’s rubber match 10-2 to the UMass Minutemen.
Chris Beesley pitched well in relief, despite allowing five earned runs in the game. Beesley had five strikeouts, but fell prey to a couple of mental lapses by the Flyer defense that ended up costing UD a chance at a comeback. The Flyers committed three errors in the game.
Beesley replaced Bryce Lahrman in the third inning after Lahrman gave up three earned runs while striking out two.
Jonathan Castine belted a solo home run for the Flyers in the bottom of the second. Josh Jeffery also bounced a run home in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Castine. Cole Tyrell and Mitchell Nelson each doubled for the Flyers.
Sunday’s game was the opposite of the first two games, in which the teams combined for 63 runs. The series completed with 75 total runs, the most runs in a series in Flyer history under head coach Tony Vittorio.
Despite falling behind early, Dayton hung tough, trailing by no more than three runs throughout the first eight innings. However, the top of the ninth was plagued with mechanical and mental miscues that allowed the Minutemen to take charge, and piece together a six-running inning.
The Flyers’ 10-2 loss drops them to 9-12 in Atlantic 10 play. Dayton is 20-28 overall this season. UD hosts Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
