For the eighth straight year, the University of Dayton Flyers had the most student-athletes on the Pioneer Football League All-Academic teams. Dayton tied Butler and San Diego with eight players named Academic All-PFL. USD and UD matched Campbell and Davidson with four first-team selections.Â
This was the 17th time year out of the league’s 19 year-history Dayton has led the PFL with the most First and Second Team members.
The Flyers have two defensive and two offensive players as first-teamers.
Senior defensive end Devon Langhorst (Sidney, OH), and senior defensive back Steve Wirkus (Broadview Heights, OH) are both academic achievers. Langhorst, a co-captain of the 2011 Flyers, was named First Team All PFL for a second year in a row. Steve Wirkus was named to the 2011 University Division Capital One Academic All-District V First Team, but is a new member to the Academic All-PFL team.
For offensive tackle Dan Prindle (Fairborn, OH), it is his third year as an Academic All-PFL member. In 2009 and 2010 he was on the second-team. Senior wide receiver Tyler Schutz (Mentor, OH), was a 2009 second-teamer, and also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team selection in the same year.
All of the 2011 first- team Flyer members are seniors. Wirkus is an Accounting major, and Schutz is a Finance major with a minor in Marketing. Prindle is a mechanical engineering major, and Langhorst an intervention specialist major.
On the second team, sophomore wide receiver, Branden Johnson (Lexington, KY), became a new Academic All-PFL member. In 2010 Johnson was a PFL Academic Honor Roll member. Senior offensive lineman, Bill Petraiuolo (Highland Heights, OH), is also a new member. Petraiuolo is a three-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll.
Joining Johnson and Petraiuolo on the second team are seniors Bryan Bailin (Naperville, IL) and Nate Miller (Medina, OH). This is Miller’s second year in a row as an Academic All-PFL member, and Bailin is a three-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll.
Bailin is a Finance major, and Miller is a marketing major. Johnson is majoring in Early Childhood Education and Petraiuolo in Pre-Med.
The Academic All PFL team was created in 1993 to recognize student athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom. The student athlete must be a starter or important reserve, reached sophomore standing academically and have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average.
