ROAD-TESTED FLYERS SET TO TAKE ON TOP-RANKED TEMPLE
The University of Dayton women’s basketball team has three games left in the regular season and is in the midst of a three-game road swing. Coming off their most lopsided loss this season, a 73-52 setback at Charlotte (third-place in the Atlantic 10), the Flyers have had a week to get ready for Temple (20-6, 11-0 A-10), tied for first in the conference with No. 6/6 Xavier. UD takes on the Owls this Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. Dayton is 7-4 in road games this season, including 3-2 in A-10 road games. The Flyers have not won against the Owls in Philadelphia since Jan. 21, 2001. Tip-off for the CBS College Sports nationally-televised game is set for 5:05 p.m. ET with announcers Brent Stover and Tammy Blackburn on the call. The game will also be audio streamed on DaytonFlyers.com with play-by-play and analysis from Shane White. The Flyers (16-9, 7-4 A-10) are currently tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 standings with Duquesne, but the Dukes would win the tiebreaker for the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship – important because the top four seeds receive a first round bye. The tournament will be held at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. from Friday, March 4-Tuesday, March 7.
THE DAYTON DETAILS
The Flyers are 16-9 overall this season and 7-4 in the Atlantic 10. Junior Justine Raterman leads UD in scoring with 16.0 ppg (5th in A-10). Raterman also leads UD in rebounds per game, averaging 7.3 (10th in A-10). Senior Kristin Daugherty adds 12.7 ppg (15th in A-10). Junior Patrice Lalor leads the team in assists with 85 (tied for 9th) and junior Casey Nance leads the Flyers in blocked shots with 32 (10th in A-10).
SCOUTING TEMPLE
The Owls are 20-6 overall, 11-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 10-1 in home contests this season. Temple, receiving 16 votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll, is coming off an 89-36 win over George Washington Wednesday, the largest margin of victory in program history. Junior Shey Peddy, a 5-foot-7 guard and transfer from Wright State, leads the Owls in scoring (13.5 ppg), rebounding (5.2 rpg), assists (118) and steals (80). Junior Kristen McCarthy adds 13.1 ppg and senior Qwedia Wallace tacks on 12.8 ppg. Temple leads the A-10 in turnover margin (+4.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1). The Owls are ranked ninth in the nation in turnovers with just 14.0 per game.
THE SERIES
This game marks the 21st meeting between Temple and Dayton and the series is tied 10-10. The two teams split last season with the Flyers winning 71-63 during the regular season at UD Arena and the Owls won 67-64 in an overtime game in the Atlantic 10 semifinals. Justine Raterman scored a game-high 19 points in that loss for the Flyers. UD is 4-6 when playing Temple in Philadelphia (including two A-10 tournament game losses). The last time UD won against the Owls in Philadelphia was Jan. 21, 2001.
UP NEXT
The Flyers continue their three-game Atlantic 10 road swing, before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 26 when Dayton hosts Fordham. Next up on the road trip is then Rhode Island on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton fell 73-52 to Charlotte on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Halton Arena. The Flyers, ranked first in the conference in points per game, were held to their lowest scoring total of the season. The 21-point margin of defeat by the 49ers is the largest this season UD has suffered. Dayton shot just 29 percent (20-of-69) from the field and turned the ball over 18 times. Kristin Daugherty led the Flyers with 14 points and Kari Daugherty added 12 points. Justine Raterman led UD in rebounding with eight boards.
TRIO OF FLYERS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS
Three University of Dayton women’s basketball players were named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District Women’s Basketball Teams, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Senior Kristin Daugherty was a First Team honoree, while sophomore Kari Daugherty and junior Justine Raterman were named to the Second Team. Kristin Daugherty, along with those from the other seven districts, will now move on to the national ballot. This year’s Capital One Academic All-America team will be announced in late February.
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR FLYERS
Over 4,000 area schoolchildren, parents and teachers packed in to UD Arena to cheer the Dayton Flyers to a 66-58 victory over the UMass Minutewomen on Dayton’s annual Math Day matinee game. Justine Raterman led the Flyers with 12 points on the day. Raterman also added six rebounds for UD. Elle Queen was Dayton’s top rebounder with four offensive and three defensive rebounds for a total of seven. Queen also had three assists and a steal.
HIGH-FLYING OFFENSE
The Flyer offense is averaging an Atlantic 10 best 77.1 ppg, which is 17th best in the nation. Their three-point field goal percentange (37.0) is 15th.
WHEN THEY WIN, THEY WIN BIG
In Dayton’s 16 wins the Flyers are outscoring opponents by 18.4 ppg. The closest score was UD’s 87-80 overtime victory over St. Bonaventure on Feb. 2. The Flyers are 10-1 in games decided by 16 or more points this season. However, UD is 0-5 in games decided by 1-5 points.
KEYS TO VICTORY
The Flyers are 6-0 this season when they shoot better than 50 percent from the field. Dayton is also 14-1 this year when scoring 70 or more points in a game. The Flyers are 15-0 when they hold the lead at the half.
FLYERS RANKED IN THE A-10
Junior Justine Raterman is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 16.0 ppg, while senior Kristin Daugherty is 15th with 12.7 ppg. Raterman is also 10th in the A-10 in rebounding with 7.3 rpg. She is one of two players to be in the Top 5 in scoring and Top 10 in rebounding in the conference. The other is Xavier’s Amber Harris. Both Raterman (3rd - .530) and Daugherty (10th - .475) are in the Top 10 in field goal percentage. Daugherty is fourth (.839) in free throw percentage and Raterman is sixth (.824). Daugherty is second in the A-10 in three-point field goal percentage with a mark of .492. Raterman is fourth at .413. Kari Daugherty is 10th (.387). Casey Nance is 10th in blocked shots (1.3) and Patrice Lalor is tied for ninth in assists (3.4) and 14th in steals (1.6). Kayla Moses is second in the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.9, while Kristin Daugherty and Lalor are tied for 10th (1.4).
SCORING MACHINE
The Flyers own seven of the top 10 spots in the A-10 for highest points scored in a game: 107 vs. Penn State is tops, followed by their 102 vs. Toledo and 101 vs. Harvard is fourth. Dayton’s 98 scored against CSU Bakersfield is sixth, while the 97 vs. Minnesota is the seventh highest tally, 91 vs. Wright State is tied for eighth and 89 vs. No. 25 Boston College is tied for 10th.
TOP 10 QUARTET
Four Flyers are in the Top 10 of major categories of UD’s all-time career records. Senior Kristin Daugherty has 1,397 points in her career, sixth all-time at UD. She also has played in 127 games, fourth all-time. Junior Justine Raterman now has 671 rebounds in her career, which is ninth all-time at Dayton. Junior Casey Nance has 161 career blocks, second all-time at UD. Junior Patrice Lalor has 338 career assists, eighth all-time.
BIG BONNIE WIN
UD Head Coach Jim Jabir picked up his 350th career win in dramatic fashion. The Flyers came from behind to knock off St. Bonaventure 87-80 in overtime Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the Reilly Center. It was also Dayton’s first win on the road against the Bonnies since 2000.Junior Justine Raterman had a double-double of 27 points (including the game-tying basket at the end of regulation) and 10 rebounds to lead Dayton. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Wilson tied a career-high with 16 points and also added a season-high eight rebounds for Dayton. Junior De’Sarae Chambers scored a season-high 16 points and junior Patrice Lalor chipped in 14 points, including 7-of-7 from the free throw line in the final 2:38 of overtime, and she also had a game-high seven assists.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Justine Raterman leads UD with three double-doubles this season; 19 points and 10 rebounds in an 80-64 win over George Washington (1/19/11), 15 points and a season-high 12 rebounds in UD’s win over Saint Joseph’s (1/29/11), and 27 points and 10 rebounds in an 87-80 overtime win over St. Bonaventure (2/2/11). Kristin Daugherty has two; 15 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Colorado (12/19/10) and 19 points and 10 rebounds in UD’s 66-55 Atlantic 10 victory at Richmond (1/22/11). Sophomore Olivia Applewhite notched her first collegiate double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds against La Salle (1/26/11).
SEVERAL STARTING LINEUPS
In 25 games this season UD Head Coach Jim Jabir has used eight different starting lineups, including a new look in the starting lineup of each of the Flyers’ first four games of the season. The lineup of Elle Queen, Justine Raterman, Casey Nance, Patrice Lalor and Kristin Daugherty has started the last 15 games for UD and Dayton is 11-4 in those games.
REAL DEAL RATERMAN
Just a junior, Justine Raterman has already scored 1,285 career points, 12th all-time at UD. She needs 68 points to reach Tobette Pleasant (1985-89) in 11th with 1,308. Raterman’s 671 rebounds are ninth all-time. She needs 43 to catch Kendel Ross (2006-10) in eighth with 714. Her 127 three-point field goals made are seventh all-time.Teammate Kristin Daugherty is sixth all-time at UD with 130.
RINGING UP 1,000
Junior Justine Raterman reached the 1,000-point milestone in the Flyers’ 91-61 win over Wright State on Nov. 29. The forward from Versailles, Ohio becomes just the eighth player in UD program history to reach the feat in her third season, and 20th overall. Raterman led all scorers with 26 points against the Raiders, shooting 10-of-14 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. She scored the 1,000th point of her career with 5:50 left to play in the game to give UD a commanding 80-57 lead.
PASSIN’ PATRICE
Patrice Lalor has 338 career assists, eighth all-time. She needs 20 to reach Beverly Crusoe (1977-80) in seventh with 358. She was tied for the Atlantic 10 lead with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio last season. She was second in the conference with 134 assists. Lalor is tied for ninth in the A-10 this season with 3.4 apg.
DAUGHERTY’S DESTINY
Senior Kristin Daugherty scored the 1,000th point of her University of Dayton career as the Flyers battled to a 74-60 win over Massachusetts Feb. 13, 2010. She became the 18th Flyer women’s basketball player to reach 1,000 and just the seventh to accomplish the feat by her junior season. She now has 1,397 points, sixth all-time at UD. She needs 16 points to catch Theresa Yingling (1982-86) in fifth with 1,413 points. Her 130 three-pointers are sixth all-time. She needs four to move up to fifth all-time, currently held by Jennifer Strong (2002-07) with 134.
CASEY’S BLOCK PARTY
Casey Nance was second in the Atlantic 10 in blocked shots last year with 64. She hit a career milestone in the George Washington game on Jan. 9, 2010. With her three swats against the Colonials she reached 101 in her career. Nance is just the fourth player in UD history to notch over 100 blocks; her current 161 career blocks are second all-time, behind Michele Kruty (‘84-88) who holds the all-time record at UD with 222 career blocks.
